HearingTest – Rewind! #1!

Posted by Molli Fire on Saturday, 9June07

Welcome to the premier edition of HT-Rewind! Issue 001!

The Greatest Hits from the first week of June:

Drones Of The Dour – Sunn O))), Wolf Eyes, Wolves In The Throneroom, Merzbow, Weedeater Shows

Sunn O))) announced a string of West Coast US shows with the incredibly talented Wolves In The Throneroom bringing furious black metal along and Southern Lord label mates Weedeater. Sunn O))) also announced that they will play the Super Sonic Fest in UK alongside Mogwai and Miasma, as well as the Dour Festival with previous tour mates Wolf Eyes plus Merzbow and Wilco.

Sunn O))) To Release Oracle On Vinyl

Sunn O))) also announced that they will be releasing Oracle on vinyl. Brainwashed got a hold of the cd and has reviewed it with samplage.

Digitized – Bob Marley’s Exodus Gets A Futuristic Release

Exodus turns 30 this year, and to celebrate Island will be reissuing the entire album on USB stick, Micro SD, deluxe cd, cd, and vinyl. The first 3 come with video footage of Bob Marley and the Wailers performing live in London in 1977. The vinyl will be reissued as an exact replica of its first release.

Dope New 50/50 Video From Wiley!

Eski Boy makes a smokin video for “50/50” from his upcoming Playtime Is Over and HearingTest has the links to a crystal clear mov format. It positively sparkles, and comes rumbling out of the subwoofers! In addition to the vid, the sweet fellas over at Big Dada have sent us a link to where you can get your own Wiley player. It’s sweet too, I wish I could show you here, but WordPress does not allow embedding of players other than a few like yT. But trust me, go check it out, it has the video for “50/50” plus audio for “Gangsters” and “Bow E3”. It’s a clever likkle device –

December ATP – Portishead, Aphex Twin, Earth, Julian Cope And More

Yep, all those folks are on the lineup. What isn’t obvious from the beginning of this report is that the second part features an album review by Julian Cope for one of the most amazing dark ambient metal bands – Sacrificial Totem. The album that Cope reviewed is Hurqalya which can be found on Katabatik. All fans of ambient noise, ambient metal, and atmospheric sonic storytelling should definitely check this out. Katabatik releases albums and hosts concerts with bands who create unique sonic experimentations. Their catalogue ranges from experimental electronica to IDM to ambient, metal, ragtime, and glitch-core. Definitely a fine resource of music.

NME Offers Free White Stripes Record In Magazine This Week

A limited edition red vinyl picture disc of “Rag And Bone” from the White Stripes’ upcoming Icky Thump was included in this week’s issue of NME. More info and pictures in the report.

Download – Matt Shadetek Releases His BBC Mix

MO FIRE! MO BASS!! Bo! This mix is the shizzle! If you haven’t already, go get this mix NOW! Killer tunes, mostly original stuff and remixes from the likes of Matt Shadetek, Drop The Lime, Plastician etc. Originally mixed for BBC’s Mary Anne Hobbs show, this is the first time its been available for download, and it’s FREE! If you like what you hear, show your love and buy some vinyl and keep it spinning!

Glen E Friedman Releases Fugazi Photos

Another fantastic picture book from the super talented Friedman. This report has links to where you can find other books by Friedman on Burning Flags Press.

Blue Scholars Video For “Back Home” From Bayani

The song rules, the video rules. Go check it out. It’s about bringing our troops home to their families where they belong.

Dragons Exist And So Do Ninjas

Ninja Tunes found a rare master tape from 1970 of psychedelic surf rock by the Dragons. Dennis Dragon is known for his work composing soundtracks for 1970’s skate films, surf films, ski films, and more. This is such an epic story of the Dragon Brothers and how they were just too far ahead of the music business in the 70’s. If you read nothing else, read this. Okay, maybe just this, Shadetek, and Wiley.

Whew! What a week! And this is just the highlights! ENJOY!

This week’s news is brought to you by the letter D

Aphex Twin, Earth, Julian Cope Play ATP W/ Portishead

Posted by Molli Fire on Saturday, 2June07

Oh that’s it. If I don’t build, buy, or otherwise acquire a teleportation device soon I’ll go mad! It started with the Roadburn Festival, then the upcoming Dour Festival, and now this – the lineup for the All Tomorrow’s Parties curated by Portishead:

All Tomorrow’s Parties NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS Lineup

PORTISHEAD

APHEX TWIN »

JULIAN COPE

SPARKLEHORSE »

ONEIDA »

BLACK MOUNTAIN »

CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX

FUZZ AGAINST JUNK

SEASICK STEVE

TEAM BRICK

EARTH »

OK, you all know how I feel about Earth (drone metal pioneers, and DEMI-gods!), but Aphex Twin? He NEVER plays live shows! He is adamant about asking for so much money to play a live show that it ensures he never gets invited to play. I’ve heard that he is nothing but a jerk to work with, but that’s besides the point. This is a truly RARE opportunity to see an amazing pioneer of experimental glitch electronica!

The ATP/Nightmare Before Christmas experimental music event takes place December 7, 8 & 9 at Butlins Holiday Camp at Minehead in the UK. For those not familiar, (and those in the US) think of an oversized playground with a pub on the coast with an experimental music camp out. According to the news on the Portishead site, “Signing up to the mailing list instantly makes you eligible in a draw to win a pair of tickets for ATP”.

Julian Cope Reviews Avant-Garde Albums Every Month

Julian Cope has a fascinating collection of music in his Album of the Month series. This month he reviewed Les Rallizes Denudés album Flightless Bird. You can stream the album while reading the review, “Facel Vega from the Heart of Darkness”.
In April, Cope reviewed a truly unique album, Hurqalya by Sacrificial Totem. It is a very limited edition album released by Katabatik in Oakland, CA (only 99 copies were issued, each with hand assembled packaging).

Sacrificial Totem – Hurqalya:
Julian Cope Reviews Sacrificial Totem Ambient Black Metal Album

How Cope came across the album is a total mystery, but it seems he was quite moved by the sonic journey it involved him in. One of the more tame statements from his review:

For Sacrificial Totem’s cataclysmic raging across our speaker systems are enormous weather-sized sonic tempests that exhibit more life force than even the most ardent proto-metal or No Wave freerock, and their calamitous sound is a key to clearing away all the slack, all the kack and all the psychic plaque that the extraneous and unnecessary moves of the Modern world build up around our senses, divorcing us from the sheer ecstasy of the exterior by numbing us up with sweet sticky melodies and rhymes of unrealistic hope

I’ve been an on again off again fan of Cope’s since I was 19, but this review makes him my journalistic mentor. I love the way some can weave a review of black metal. If you don’t recognize his name right off the bat, you may have heard him uttering chants of doom on the Sunn O))) White Album….

Sacrificial Totem artist page on Katabatik.org

The second track on this mix is from the Hurqalya album:

click to play the mix. It is a KPFA radio dj set of all Katabatik artists, the full tracklist is on Katabatik’s Sounds page. You can download the mp3 from their site.

Evidence From Trail Of Destruction/TS002

Posted by Molli Fire on Sunday, 13May07

Well, it sure took awhile for me to finish editing and uploading the fotos and videos from the last 5lowershop shindig, but alas, here they are!

Doormouse, End.User, Kontroversy 396, Arson, Bonk, HRock, 666 Gangstaz, the_Stapler_, Planetsize, Rtype, Fishstix, Heartworm CELEBRATE THE RECORD RELEASE OF TEEN SUICIDE 002

this was the flyer for the event:

end-door-user-mouse-flyer.jpg

I apologize that so much of the foto and video footage is so dark…it is after all an underground warehouse with minimal lighting except for cool trippy stuff that doesn’t translate well to film.

here are the fotos:

Sorry!  Fotos will be back tomorrow.

AND here are the videos:

this one is my favorite: it’s 5am at this point, listen to the crowd still cheering & yelling!

Thanks to everyone who came out an supported this event! Thanks to all the performers – every single one ROCKED the house! This party was off the hook fun until at least 7am! thanks to Doormouse and End.User for traveling to SF to show us a good time! Thanks to local heroes Kontroversy 396, Arson, Bonk, Heartworm, and Fishstix! AND A HUGE BIG UPS AND CONGRATULATIONS TO RTYPE – for getting Teen Suicide 002 pressed to gorgeous vinyl, mastered by the one and only Tim Xavier! Also BIG UPS & THANKS to the Teen Suicide 002 superstars – HROCK, 666 GANGSTAZ, THE_STAPLER_, & PLANETSIZE r.i.p………

To everyone else- you missed out, your only redemption is to be at the next 5lowershop bru-ha.

Here is the info on the record release, Teen Suicide 002 :

previews of the tracks are available at http://www.myspace.com/teensuicide

Teen Suicide 02 – Welcome to Bayshore EP
Four tracks showcasing the best breakcore, hardcore and jungle artists
associated with San Francisco’s 5lowershop soundsystem.

666Gangstaz – Tricknology
A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, a hop, skip, and a jump away from Detroit,
Todd Cook (aka 666Gangstaz aka DJ Crackhouse aka the Slime Lord) grew up
equally influenced by Jeff Mills as Soundmurderer and SK-1. His track
“Tricknology” combines the frenetic chaos and vst trickery of breakcore and
IDM with the bass and tempo of dubstep and techno. Don’t worry, a DJ
friendly intro/outro will make it a snap to mix in.

H-Rock – This One is for Ramo (Julian’s Reprise)
Victor Evans is fast becoming a rising star in hardcore techno. His track on
the first Teen Suicide melted clubs from Rotterdam to San Francisco. This
track is even better. A dedication to the movie Beat Street and graffiti
writers worldwide, this track caused teenaged girls to hug and kiss each
other with excitement in Portland. I swear, I was there. H-Rock produces
speedcore and noise as Vankmen. The “H-Rock vs Vankmen EP” is scheduled to
be released as Teen Suicide 04, as well as a debut release on Fathme
Records, good friends of ours. Look out!

The Stapler – Coldf33t
The Staper (aka DJ FVK aka SoFat! Soundsystem aka DJ Heathrow) was first
exposed to ragga jungle and hardcore through squat parties in London’s
notorious Hackney Wick. After moving back to New York City,
the Stapler started SoFat! Soundsystem, playing the finest in dub, ragga
jungle and breakcore. Now a resident of San Francisco, the Stapler has been
producing original and distinctive ragga jungle. You don’t need a duthmaster
to enjoy this, you’ll be hooked with the first bass note.

Planetsize – Binary Brotha
This record is dedicated to the memory Planetsize. A close friend to
everyone involved with Teen Suicide Records and 5lowershop soundsystem, he
passed away shortly before this record came out. “Binary Brotha” is
definitely the most insane track on the record. Breakcore without limits and
designed to rock a soundsystem, the track is also a reminder of what we
lost.

Today’s WordPress Problem Fixed With Easy Solution

Posted by Molli Fire on Monday, 30April07

hi there music fans!

if you are viewing this post on the actual webpage, you might notice that HearingTest looks quite different today. it’s true, and hopefully it is only a temporary solution. i dun know what gwan with di wordpress serverisms, but i go lookin at me page and the sidebars are all muckled up something naaasty! it seems that the problem is limited to only 2 or 3 wordpress themes : Andreas 09, which is what i was using, Garland and Freshy. Freshy is causing problems for some but not others. those are 3 out of about 4 total wordpress themes which offer 2 sidebars aka 3 columns. well, it just so happens that wordpress support peeps were away at the moment, perhaps fully aware of the situation and already investigating. so, until dis a figured out, i jes simple changed di theme to somethin similar but totally different, and everything is where it should be, no bugs or nuthin. i decided to use the theme titled “2813” because it has 2 sidebars plus the main column, which is as close to the other theme that i could find. that’s right, i jes change di theme to anything else besides those 2, and all of my sidebar info is restored with no additional work. judging from users feedback in the forum, any 3 column theme is potentially problematic right now. some users were not able to fix the problem with the 2813 theme, but got good results from switching to a 2 column theme. the best advice is – leave those widgets and sidebars alone! there is probably nothing wrong with them, it’s a problem with the theme that is having trouble communicating with them. if you make changes now, you could end up deleting them yourself when they were fine to begin with. if you want to make any changes while wordpress is working on the fix, stick with theme changes and posts, but don’t touch anything else. whew! so glad i dun hafta recreate alla dat. i got nuff work drowning me right now. no time fer di blog.

Report from the HearingTest HQ

i’m almost finished wit what i am writing and contributing for the reggae music and culture book i am collabing on. heaps of amazing research results, and some pretty good rants and tirades about dancehall music, its influence on other styles of music, and its place in the world. i’m writing pages and pages of content about soundsystem culture, the huge part that the dance-as-social-gathering has played in the survival of some of the world’s most oppressed populations, the psychoacoustic effects of riddims, speaker stacks, and repetitive drumming, even some crazy in-depth shizzle about dancing as the antidote to Babylon’s toxins – a fairly thorough exploration into the outmoded fight or flight response, which is more psychoacoustic stuff. you will definitely see some excerpts from alla dat come up soon.

thanks again for bearing through technoccult difficulties over pon HearingTest music brewery…..

a few things that will be revealed on HT this week, for you to anticipate :

  • photos and videos from a killer roots underground sound system party that featured End.User, Dan Doormouse, Arson, Bonk, theStapler, 666 Gangstaz, and Rtype. celebrating the record release of Teen Suicide 002!!
TS002 is engraved with secret messages from 666 Gangstaz, HRock, the Stapler, and Planetsize. Available in record stores worldwide starting this week!
  • essays and rambling thoughts about dancehall – it’s history, cultural significance, and continuing cross cultural popularity…
  • more news than is worthy of reporting, except everybody likes something different, so hopefully you will enjoy at least one post per day.

and, we’ll just have to see what else happens. hopefully something fantastic and worthy of further discussion.

~have a lovely week~
miss iVi

Posted by Molli Fire on Wednesday, 11April07

every year since 2002, the Red Bull Academy has gathered an overwhelming roster of teachers and pupils together from around the globe to share skills, knowledge, experience, equipment, and philosophy.

Wyl Menmuir published this on the FLY website at the end of last week actually, but i just noticed it today. there is still plenty of time to check out this Academy idea, mull it over, and then apply, so i wanted to share it with you right away!

The Toronto Red Bull Academy 2007 kicks off this April with Info Sessions across the UK from DJs, producers and musicians.

Some of the UK’s most promising hip-hop, soul, broken beat, dubstep, D&B artists will be headed out to Toronto as part of the Academy, which offers an insight into music making today.

Music makers, producers and DJs can apply to be jetted to Toronto for two weeks in September and October to get tuition from the likes of Bob Moog, Phonte from Little Brother, the Mizell Brothers and twenty-year-old dubstep DJ, Skream. The emphasis is on creating, with a combination of live performances in the host city and lectures in studios.

The Academy is running taster days across the UK in April for anyone interested with talks from Four Tet (London), Greg Wilson (Leeds), Alex Smoke (Glasgow) and Waajeed (Platinum Pies Pipers, Detroit) in Birmingham. As all the sessions are free it’s a win win for anyone wanting to further their music making.

The UK Info Sessions are:
Wed 18 April, at Glasgow’s Sub Club with guest lecturers Alex Smoke, Beni G, (Mixologists) and Marcia Graham. Starts at 8pm.
Fri 20 April, at London’s Roundhouse with lectures from Seiji, Four Tet, DJ Zinc, studio workshops from Danny Breaks, Zinc, Tony Nwachukwu, Logic, Reason, Ableton Live and Serato. Starts midday.

the Academy website also hosts numerous educational materials in the form of videos, podcasts, streams and the like. whether you apply for the full enrollment experience or not, this provides many opportunities to hone your skills as a producer, dj, MC, sound engineer, etc.

info about this year’s featured city, Toronto, application info and deadlines, and the dates of the 2 different 2-week long “semesters” can all be found at :
http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com/APPLY.17.0.html

the locations that hosted the academy previously :
2006 Melbourne
2005 Seattle
2004 Rome
2003 Cape Town
2002 Sao Paulo

loads of questions answered in the Academy’s FAQ

events are scheduled for everyday this month, but in different cities and countries. see if there is an event near you on the CALENDAR

tonight is/was in Belgrade, on thursday, april 12th, TORONTO will have a FREE event with the Cut Chemist and Bernard Purdie!!
other highlights include Grandmaster Flash in Amsterdam, Arabian Prince (ex-NWA) in Zurich, dj Zinc and Henrik Schwarz in Berlin, Kode 9 in Valencia, and a street party called “Popular Soundclash” in Lisbon, not to mention detroit djs, idm producers, Skream, Super Collider, Reason, Live, and Serato demonstrations!

https://i1.wp.com/mog.com/images/users/0000/0004/9826/images/1176252838.jpeg

there are many more big names and amazing info sessions, workshops, and after parties in more international cities than what i have listed here. the site is coded in a flash player, so i have to hand copy each name and place, so instead, i am encouraging you, nudging you, pressuring you to go check the calendar! especially if you are in melbourne, europe, or south america. i did not see anything planned for any US cities, but there were at least 2 or 3 events in Canada. there will also an info session and equipment tour held in the Tuff Gong recording studios in Jamaica!

enjoy the events, apply for a scholarship, and pop back in here to share your experiences with me, please! :)

Bjork’s Volta Gets Leaked

Posted by Molli Fire on Thursday, 29March07

according to Pitchfork today, Bjork has joined the new trend of “leaking” new material onto the internet. there are a series of micro-teasers to bizarre for me to even list here, so if you really want to hunt down little snippets that might be from the upcoming Volta album, then go check out Pitchfork

ok, ok, fine, Gerome Voltaire is a REAL person living in Reykjavik, who is remixing snippets of music he recorded with a neighboring artist. and Bjork will be furious when she finds out he is putting this stuff on the web. sure. ;) .

E.A.R. – Travelling Electronic Experiments

Posted by Molli Fire on Thursday, 29March07

Hurray!!! Finally, EAR, Experimental Audio Research, is touring!! Not too many chances to catch his far out experimentalism, only a handful of US dates spanning April, and only 2 in London, but better than nothing which is all we have heard from EAR lately!
EAR was created by an experimental electronic scientist, Peter Kember, aka Sonic Boom, who may be more well known for his participation in surf guitar rock band, Spaceman 3, and psychedelic spaced out guitar rock band, Spectrum. There seems to be no limit to the scope and direction of the experimentations. he is notorious for his use of mulitple speak and spells as instruments and found sound recordings. i own an album which consists of nothing but recordings and simulations of daily noises, starting with the time of dinosaurs, and progressing to the modern experience. For further and deeper descriptions of this project, please read the bio on Sonic Boom’s website.

ear.jpg

It gets better, the April 15th London performance will have EAR opening for Cluster! The April 30th London performance will also present a performance by Bert Jansch! Cluster, formed in the 70’s, is one of Germany’s pioneer experimental electronica bands. Cluster has collaborated with experimental krautrock band, Neu! and Brian Eno. These days, Cluster play mostly ambient electronic krautrock, and as far as i know, they have not toured since 1997. Bert Jansch is the founding member of Pentangle and won the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001 for his work in folk music. The Scotsman has worked with Neil Young, Johnny Marr, and Jimmy Page, among others.

According to Sonic Boom’s website, here are the dates and places :

1 APRIL 2007, NYC, NY

E.A.R., REBEL NYC
2 APRIL 2007, PHILADELPHIA, PA

E.A.R., JOHNNY BRENDA’S

E.A.R., LAKESHORE THEATRE
5 APRIL 2007, AUSTIN, TX

E.A.R., EMO’S
8 APRIL 2007, SAN FRANCISCO, CA

9 APRIL 2007, HOLLYWOOD, CA

SONAR – Electronic Music Festival Lineup

Posted by Molli Fire on Wednesday, 21March07

SONAR, the avant-garde electronic music conference/concert/museum exhibition that takes place every year in Barcelona, has announced its lineup of djs and live bands. The 3 day event takes place June 14th-17th and includes individual showcases by representatives from many different aspects of the music industry.

Think daytime schmoozing with everyone from radio, labels, and bands, to designers, artists, and press. And it’s in Spain, where daytime means after the peak of the day. Imagine warm nights of sizzling concerts by Legends of pop/electronic/rock/funk. For an entire weekend!

This lineup is tugging at my passport. It’s tugging hard! Here is a tiny taste, but you’ll have to go to the Sonar website for the full list.

Beastie Boys – Still rockin the mic!
Devo! Mogwai! Mala Rodriguez! Clark! Dizzee Rascal! Wolf Eyes! Jeff Mills! NYPC! Simian Mobile Disco! oh I have to stop, you *must* go look!

This bare bones list with its tiny font would take up half the blogOsphere : Sonar 2007 Line-Up
once you have seen the entire lineup, you can scope the concert and showcase info here : Concerts & Dj’s

Also, many other artists and musicians will be playing via the individual showcases. Some of the highlights include :

BBC radio – Kode 9, Skream
Ed Banger Recs – Uffie feat. Feadz

oh, how i wish i could teleport. i need a TARDIS. maybe i’ll check ebay this week…..
