Fans of surf rock, Beach Boys instrumentals, and late 60’s psychedelic jazz, may I please have your exquisite attention for a moment. I have some big news for you…
“Here’s a little story, I got to tell, about 3 bad brothers, you know SO well. It started way back in history, with Doug, Daryl, Dennis, and Donn Landee….”
It begins with the story of the Dragon brothers, which reads like the Lords of Dogtown for psychedelic surf rockers. In the late 60’s, Doug, Daryl and Dennis Dragon lived, surfed, and rocked in Malibu California. Donn Landee, a high school friend of Dennis Dragon, was working as a recording engineer at Sunwest Recording Studios in Hollywood. The Dragons would sometimes go to the studio to record tracks in the wee hours of morning after finishing a gig in LA. This story is so good, I need to let the original author tell it:
They call the sessions “Blue Forces Intelligence,” find themselves layering their instruments in new ways, adding deep, bassy vocal lines and then ramming them up against falsetto harmonies, adding organs and space age sound effects, recording spirituals and pop and crazy rock opera. The effect is increasingly spacey and weird, but also funky – a missing link between new directions others are exploring in jazz and soul as well as rock music.
Unfortunately, the suits at the West Coast offices of the major labels aren’t ready, complaining that they don’t hear a hit. After shopping the record, now called just “BFI”, for a few months, the boys become disillusioned and focus instead on their session work. They all end up working in the Beach Boys’ backing band. Doug moves to Hawaii, tours Australia. Dennis becomes a successful record producer. Daryl hooks up with Toni Tennille and experiences international chart success as “The Captain”. The Dragons’ “BFI” is forgotten.
In addition to this surf album, Dennis Dragon also composed the soundtracks for skate movies and ski movies…
Jump on 37 years. Strictly Kev/DJ Food, influential mixologist and designer for Ninja Tune and obsessive record collector – picks up a new batch of vinyl from a record dealer he knows. In amongst them is a 500-run private pressing of the soundtrack to a surf movie called “A Sea For Yourself”. On it is a track called “Food For My Soul” by a band called the Dragons. Kev being a fan of all possible food-based puns and currently putting together the mix for his new “Solid Steel” mix cd for Ninja, drops the needle on the groove.
What he finds amazes him – a true psychedelic original from a band he’s never heard of. Using his extensive contacts in the world of vinyl mania, he manages to track Dennis Dragon down. He emails him, asks him if he can include “Food For My Soul” on the mix. Sure, says Dennis. There’s a whole album of the stuff if he’s interested. Dennis checks. Donn still has the master tapes. He converts them to mp3 and emails them to Kev. Kev is blown away. He forwards them to Ninja Tune. Ninja Tune think it’s a scam. But then they listen. And they listen again. And then, after nearly forty years sitting on a recording engineer’s shelf, Ninja Tune decide to release “BFI”.
I was so entranced by this story that appeared as a humble press release in my inbox today, that I had to just quote it directly. I rarely do this, but this was just too good.
“And moral of this story is: keep your master tapes. Whatever you do, keep your master tapes. ”
-James from Ninja Tune
Boy is that the truth! The question now, is ARE YOU READY?
BFI, recorded by The Dragons in 1970, will be released August 27th 2007 by the one and only Ninja Tune! “Food for my soul” was included on both the full length album, Solid Steel Presents DJ Food & DK: Now, Listen Again! and the limited edition Now, Listen Again! 7″ promo record which were both released in April of this year. Check the Ninja Tune Store for copies.

Canadian post-rock fans – I bring you reasons to rejoice! Broken Social Scensters/Do Make Say Thinkers/KC Accidentalists have been working on a new album. Kevin Drew (of BSS) wrote the songs and recorded them at his mate Ohad Benchetrit‘s studio. The music is played by Kevin, Ohad, and Charles Spearin, which leads one to wonder – Is this a BSS album, a KC Accidental album, or a DMST album? None of the above. It’s Kevin Drew’s solo album, despite calling it Broken Social Scene Presents Kevin Drew, “Spirit If…”
A press release put out by Arts&Crafts (the record label for BSS, Feist, among others) states that the new album is all from Kevin’s musings and favorite activities. Specifically, the album is about “fucking, fighting, fearing and hope.” Broken Social Scene’s other core founding member, Brendan Canning is working on Broken Social Scene Presents… Volume 2 while a BSS Presents tour is in the works for this fall. Watch the Arts&Crafts website for updates, and of course HearingTest news. If all this musical crossbreeding has you completely confused, check the wiki pages in the links to sort it all out. Canadians are just more Social than most, eh?

Oxjam, the Oxfam music festival, announced its preliminary lineup today. Oxjam is no ordinary show, it is an umbrella for 3,000 music events that take place in the UK in October. Oxjam is considered a movement – different musicians, artists, promoters and party people come together each year to try to raise money and awareness for Oxfam. Oxfam is a UK charity whose mission is to end poverty worldwide. So, you can see why it would take such a large event to accomplish such a HUGE goal.
The Klaxons are one of the headliners of this year’s event, and their very own James Righton describes Oxjam thus:
For us, Oxjam is the highlight of the festival season because everyone gets to make the noise themselves. The only thing more exciting than putting on your own event to help fight poverty is knowing that you’re part of a movement of thousands of gigs, club nights and events right across the country.
That’s right, Oxjam needs your help putting these events together! Each year they put out the call for musicians and promoters to organize events as part of the greater movement. And besides a feeling of accomplishment and the satisfaction that you are making the world a better place to live, you might also get featured on MTV. So, if you are in the UK or plan on being there in October, you might want to join the fun!
OXJAM Partial LINEUP 2007
Lost Without Cause
The Clerks Band
The Bakery Girls
That’s a lot of K in a lineup… 40,000 musicians total are expected to be involved, so don’t expect a full lineup from me! :) To find out more about any of these bands, and to see other bands that are involved in Oxjam 2007, go to the Mtv Oxjam page…

On July 10th, the wonderful label/catalog known only as ANTI- will release to the public the recording of Healing the Divide: A Concert for Peace and Reconciliation which was hosted by the Lincoln Center in NYC on September 21, 2003. This concert was the grand finale on the Dalai Lama’s 2003 US tour and featured live performances by Tom Waits, Kronos Quartet, Greg Cohen, Philip Glass, Anoushka Shankar and more. In fact, here is the cd tracklist:
TRACKLIST FOR Healing The Divide:
01 Speech by His Holiness the Dalai Lama
02 The Gyoto Tantric Choir – “Invocation”
03 Anoushka Shankar – “Nivedan”
04 Nawang Khechong and R. Carlos Nakai – “Peace Chants”
05 Phillip Glass and Foday Musa Suso – “The Gambia”
06 Tom Waits and Kronos Quartet with Greg Cohen – “Way Down in the Hole”
07 Tom Waits and Kronos Quartet with Greg Cohen – “God’s Away on Business”
08 Tom Waits and Kronos Quartet with Greg Cohen – “Lost in the Harbor”
09 Tom Waits and Kronos Quartet with Greg Cohen – “Diamond in Your Mind”
Healing The Divide is a non-profit organization created in 2002 in NYC that according to wiki, “maintains an international focus on conflict resolution, as it works in four “program” areas: health, justice, peace, and education/culture.” According to HTD’s own website:
Healing the Divide was created to challenge existing, failed modes of thought and action and to foster the kind of revolutionary transformations needed to break the bonds of ignorance, intolerance and injustice.
According to the press release:
All of the artists, Anti- Records, and Healing the Divide are donating all their proceeds from sales to Healing the Divide’s Tibetan Health Initiative, a program that provides health insurance and medical care to impoverished Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns living in refugee settlements. Each CD purchase provides one year of health insurance.
Tom Waits is quoted in the release as describing his involvement with the concert thus:
I’m no fool. It’s a spiritual insurance policy. Hell, at my age, the next group I put together, everyone may be playing a harp. All kidding aside, I owed His Holiness a favor. He did all my papers in school.
The cd will be available in stores and by download from iTunes starting on July 10th, and a DVD of the concert is also in the works according to some sources.

The freshly released Reggae Festival Guide 2007 announces this non-reggae festival which I think many California readers would enjoy. The lineup includes the smoking hot Ivan Neville and Leo Nocentelli as part of the New Orleans Social Club. And on that note, Ivan Neville was AMAZING amazing amAzing last night at the MOG Anniversary party! He had 3 keyboards in a stack and looked like his was dribbling some mean bball the way his hands were bouncing. The entire band brought the N’arlins funk and heat to a starved SF scene. It was excellent, too bad if you missed it, definitely jump at any opportunity to see Ivan Neville, Zigaboo Modeliste, George Porter Junior, and Renard Poche. Like at this festival in Sonoma for example:
I don’t want to leave out any important details, so here is the script, straight from the guide:
Health and Harmony Festival
June 8, 9, 10, 2007
Sonoma County Fairgrounds
As the earth spins toward the summer solstice, people naturally feel a need to come together outside and celebrate – it’s hardwired into our instincts. Last year’s Festival was the largest and most successful ever, and just to make sure this year is even better, the Festival organizers have gone into partnership with the institution that defined concert production nationwide, Northern California’s own Live Nation (formerly Bill Graham Presents). Said Festival Director Scott McKeown, “Combining the strengths of both organizations allows us to bring to the North Bay a world-class music and lifestyle festival as has never before been seen in Northern California.” It’s an unbeatable combination.
For the first time in the festival’s substantial history, Friday will offer a full day of music and events: three days, three nights, and three Main Stages full of fun and music.
Brian Wilson (of the Beach Boys), soul diva Erykah Badu, conscious hip-hop revolutionaries The Roots, Rickie Lee Jones, New Orleans Social Club (featuring Ivan Neville and the legendary Leo Nocentelli among others), and the cream of the jam band and acoustic world, including moe., Umphrey’s McGee, the Waybacks, Hot Buttered Rum, Animal Liberation Orchestra, the Mike Stern Allstars (featuring Victor Wooten of the Flecktones and Dennis Chambers along with Miles Davis guitarist Stern), Vernon Bush, New Monsoon, Common, and Sound Tribe Sector 9 lead the musical entertainment.
As always, there will be further music late at night with the “Harmony After Dark Zone,” featuring Jai Uttal, One at Last, Sheila Chandra, and Shimsai among many others. The “After Dark Zone” will be in three different venues for one modest price. Along with that, the Techno Tribal Dance, with Stanton Warrior, Shpongle, Ganga Girl, and Rabbit in the Moon among others, will go late with the very best of trance dance culture,
Of course, music is only one aspect of the 29th Harmony Festival, which will bring together many different facets of leading-edge information and approaches to healthier, more satisfying lifestyles with an amazing array of distinguished speakers, including Amy Goodman, Arianna Huffington, Edwin Black, Van Jones, and Rabbi Michael Lerner.
This year’s Festival theme is “Promoting Global Cooling.” Every conscious person is aware of the current planetary crisis, and forums, speakers, and exhibits will provide much valuable information; but the theme has a double meaning as it seeks to present an alternative, calmer worldview that seeks to cool down the currently over-heated and divisive partisan atmosphere in which these matters are being considered. Harmony means many things here, in musical, political, and spiritual terms, and the Festival is a holistic gathering that presents the most compelling advances in personal and social transformation, health, healing, ecology, art, activism, food, politics – in fact, the whole life package. It is a Party with a Purpose.

More Prince residencies! Oooooh, this looks like such a swEEt gig too! Prince, born Prince Rogers Nelson, is working out a contract to perform for seven straight Friday nights at the Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles. Prince would be joined by a different guest each week and perform from 11:30-1:30 in the Blossom Room. Wait, it gets even better! At 2am when most shows are ending, and audiences heading home, Prince’s chef takes over the hotel kitchen, and the restaurant turns into an after-hours dinner club while Prince woos the diners with his Jazz ensemble until 4am! Dang i want a gig like that when i have a chef!
The stint starts June 15 and runs through July. We’ll see if the deal works out… Watch the LA Times for the details.
Prince will be staying in the Roosevelt Hotel with his band during this time, rehearsing for 2 concerts in the Hamptons (NYC) and a 21 concert series in London this summer. I like his style, how often does an artist enjoy a nice leisurely tour, sleeping in a big comfortable bed each night…

You can find all the info you need at
The main person missing from this lineup, in my opinion, is G Love & the Special Sauce… now why aren’t you playing at this G? Well, this lineup has more happy music than blues anyway. Just goes to show, life in Canada is good. Even their bluesfests don’t sing the blues…

Alto-sax legend and free-jazz pioneer, Ornette Coleman received the 2007 Pulitzer Prize In Music for Sound Grammar.
Coleman is widely recognized as the pioneer of the free-jazz style with his major-label debut album in 1959, The Shape Of Jazz To Come on Atlantic Recordings. Nearly 50 years later, he recorded the album that would win the prestigous prize : his 2006 release, Sound Grammar. According to it’s review in All About Jazz in September 2006 :
Sound Grammar, a live set recorded in Germany in October 2005, features a quartet with his son Denardo on drums and two bassists—Gregory Cohen (picking); and Tony Falanga (bowing). The two-bass dynamic creates a texture that feels viscous and frictional at the same time, a perfect backdrop for the saxophonist’s piercingly resonant tone, which finds the “sound of expressed reality.”
Sound Grammar is Coleman’s first release in 10 years and surpasses studio recordings made at the peak of his career, in 1996. It is the first jazz album to be awarded a Pulitzer, and Coleman is only the second jazz artist to be awarded. Wynton Marsalis received one in 1997 for an oratory piece called “Blood on the Fields”, about slavery.
This is Ornette’s year! The esteemed musician was also awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievment Award, and Sound Grammar was a nominee for Grammy’s “Best Jazz Instrumental Album” in 2007.
Coleman and his quartet will be touring Europe plus a few US stops this summer. Dates are listed at the end of this post.
The webpage for the Pulitzer Prize In Music has more info on the award as well as the names of nominees for the category.
