Have A Blast At The Glast!

Glastonbury music festival descends upon the English countryside on Friday June 27th. The full lineup is absolutely insane, I can see how this is the biggest rock festival in the UK. Over 200 bands fill the lineup, and a press release states that over 177,000 people are expected to attend! Since I can’t possibly fit the full lineup here, I’ll give you one serious tease instead. In addition to the many stages already announced, I just discovered today that BBC Radio 1 has added their own stage to the festival. The additional lineup includes Tigerstyle, JME, and Ben Sharpa.

Four tracks showcasing the best breakcore, hardcore and jungle artists
associated with San Francisco’s 5lowershop soundsystem.

666Gangstaz – Tricknology
A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, a hop, skip, and a jump away from Detroit,
Todd Cook (aka 666Gangstaz aka DJ Crackhouse aka the Slime Lord) grew up
equally influenced by Jeff Mills as Soundmurderer and SK-1. His track
“Tricknology” combines the frenetic chaos and vst trickery of breakcore and
IDM with the bass and tempo of dubstep and techno. Don’t worry, a DJ
friendly intro/outro will make it a snap to mix in.

H-Rock – This One is for Ramo (Julian’s Reprise)
Victor Evans is fast becoming a rising star in hardcore techno. His track on
the first Teen Suicide melted clubs from Rotterdam to San Francisco. This
track is even better. A dedication to the movie Beat Street and graffiti
writers worldwide, this track caused teenaged girls to hug and kiss each
other with excitement in Portland. I swear, I was there. H-Rock produces
speedcore and noise as Vankmen. The “H-Rock vs Vankmen EP” is scheduled to
be released as Teen Suicide 04, as well as a debut release on Fathme
Records, good friends of ours. Look out!

The Stapler – Coldf33t
The Staper (aka DJ FVK aka SoFat! Soundsystem aka DJ Heathrow) was first
exposed to ragga jungle and hardcore through squat parties in London’s
notorious Hackney Wick. After moving back to New York City,
the Stapler started SoFat! Soundsystem, playing the finest in dub, ragga
jungle and breakcore. Now a resident of San Francisco, the Stapler has been
producing original and distinctive ragga jungle. You don’t need a duthmaster
to enjoy this, you’ll be hooked with the first bass note.

Planetsize – Binary Brotha
This record is dedicated to the memory Planetsize. A close friend to
everyone involved with Teen Suicide Records and 5lowershop soundsystem, he
passed away shortly before this record came out. “Binary Brotha” is
definitely the most insane track on the record. Breakcore without limits and
designed to rock a soundsystem, the track is also a reminder of what we

Big Brother Is Trying To Outlaw Fun, Dancing Is Revolutionary

While the RIAA and CRB are working diligently to eliminate public access to music and radio online, politicians and police are dredging up ways to prevent people from making music and dancing.

I’m about to show you the different ways that NYC groups are working to open the possibilities for live music and dance events in a city that is clamping down on music venues. Here you will find fun parties to go to, a review of the Mayday celebration, and the historical significance of how our access to social gatherings is being eroded.

The current prohibition atmosphere of certain major cities from SF to NYC, the actions of the RIAA and CRB towards university students and webcasters during the last few years, and the FCC’s increased licensing “laws” and gestapo raids on micro-powered radio broadcasters a few years before that, mirror the conflicted relationship between legislative bodies and community supported channels of entertainment in nearly every medium, in every modern nation. Today, the headlines are focused on the censorship of live music and the act of dancing to live music, but the struggle remains the same as the days of prohibition. Here is what made headlines today….

NYC Cabaret Laws Are Destroying The Music Scene

New York City has been severely deprived of live entertainment because of tight restrictions that make it difficult to obtain and maintain cabaret licenses. Similar in spirit to crackhouse laws in the Southern states and the Criminal Justice Act created by the UK Parliament in 1994 to prevent large music festivals and the public performance of music with a repeating sequence of beats.
Big Brother is trying to outlaw fun. And what’s worse, is that it’s being done with laws that are incredibly prejudiced – these laws were written and passed to prevent interracial socializing (cabaret laws), to profile music enthusiasts as drug users (crackhouse laws), and to limit the free assembly of low-income people (any law that forces you to get a permit to use public land). Basically, these laws are designed to keep the people complacent through homogenized outlets of safe entertainment, and restrict the channels that provide an opportunity for revolt. Even though most of these channels are not trying to revolt against anything, they are trying to provide opportunities to relax and have a good time. Different people prefer different forms of relaxation, but all should have equal access to methods that are widely enjoyed, no? Not all will feel relaxed at the opera, or a Gwen Stefani concert, but I think all people should be encouraged to enjoy the performance of music and dancing.

Greg Miller, the president and spokesperson of Dance Parade, told metro :

“Three years ago, there were 300 cabaret licenses,” Miller said. “Every three months the number drops by 15. It’s so hard not only to get a new cabaret license, but to get one renewed because of building codes.”
“there are 148 cabaret licenses and that includes adult entertainment, hotels and restaurants”

What happens when a vibrant city like NYC has trouble finding legal venues to socialize in? Music venues are dropping like flies in the Big Apple – just 2 weeks ago, the closing of the Tonic and subsequent arrests made headlines, while many readers may not have noticed the FOR SALE sign on the building that houses the Knitting Factory. The Knitting Factory is not in immediate danger of closing. Despite a sale of the building, the venue will continue to operate through their 2009 lease. After this date however: “there has been no decision as to the future of the venue.” In NYC, 5 venues a month lose their cabaret licenseWhat is there to do then, in the nightlife capital of the world?

Dancing In The Streets Of New York

What happens when there is no legal venue to party in? The party people take to the streets! The next opportunity to meet up with New York City’s finest revelers for a day of Dancing In The Streets will arrive on May 19th. That’s the day for the first annual Dance Parade with thousands of dancers – including YOU – and top djs Kool Herc, Danny Tenaglia, John Jellybean Benitez. There will also be performances from many dance groups representing different styles, from breakdancing to ballet, with whirling and wild styles. The Dance Parade is organized to raise awareness about the cabaret law as well as NYC’s dance history.

Dance Parade’s president Greg Miller is not new to events in public space. This past Saturday found him at the 9th Annual Blackkat Mayday party, which itself faced permit issues for the first time ever. Instead of the community gathering being held in Tompkins Square Park, the event site for the last 8 years, the organizers had to choose another location when unable to obtain permits required in a timely manner. Jason BK told the metro that the Blackkat artist collective had applied for the permits in January, and had not received permission by May 1st!

9th Annual NYC Blackkat Mayday Party

In the tradition of International Workers’ Day, the crew of artists and musicians known as Blackkat hosted their 9th annual Mayday Party in NYC this past Sunday. Blackkat has organized free and low-cost community events in NYC for over a decade, such as Party 4 Freedom and Justice in 2002, and the Biotour Benefit in 2005. The Indypendent newspaper reported from the 2007 Mayday party, quoting Jason BK, Amok, and Chrome, who supply and maintain the sound for these events- from the speakers to the noise :

“We live in a city where money and getting your name out there is more important than actual content that’s provided,” said Amok, a musician and two year Blackkat collective member. “This is what makes Blackkat so very different, it puts content first always … which is something that other crews unfortunately forget to do.”

In the past, Blackkat has joined forces with other groups including Dance Parade New York, the Madagascar Institute, The Danger, DanceSafe, Renegade Virus and Havoc Sound. Events have included a fundraiser for the 2005 Biotour benefit, numerous festivals and parties in various warehouses such as 3rd Ward and the now closed Lunatarium and 38Nine (in Queens).

“The main point is that it is vital that people come together in a creative community and we hope that these events can be part of that community,” said Chrome. BK added, “They have to be fun to be effective.”

Guest speakers this year included Norman Siegel, a civil rights attorney, and Missy Galore of the NYC Dance Parade. Information tables were hosted by DanceSafe, IndyMedia, Metro In Motion TriState Biodiesel and more. The sound stage was provided by MadAro, Anthony, and Disorient with maestro Daniel.

Blackkat And Friends

Check out the official Blackkat website, where you can see more pix from the event, download super tight dj mixes by the Blackkat noise bringers, and choose your own adventure from there, it’s a mad mad jungle what this fella get up to when he gets together with some friends! It reminds me of a quote about Spiral Tribe, another music and art based soundsystem unorganization who were participated in events around the UK countryside from dusk til dawn til dusk and dawn again for days. The quote is from Spaces of Democracy :

“Spiral Tribe, with their free and inclusive parties, succeeded in constituting an alternative public space, rather than just a secret one. Though no one could say how many lives were touched in their three year tour of duty”.

Props to the Blackkat population for bringing it for more than 10 years! The roots run deep, the branches have touched many, many people.

The Rest Is History…

Blackkat, HavocSound, soFat! Sound, and Renegade Virus joined forces during 2001-2004, hauling speakers, generators, records or synths throughout NYC plus occasional road trips to other parts of the US and Canada. These soundsystem collaborations earned much respect and no money for providing nonstop music at the Annual Blackkat Mayday Party, Swamptek, Autonomous Mutant Festival, Monsters of Love 1-4, renegade outdoor free parties across the NYC/SF/US, and underground warehouse events in NYC and SF, all while supporting and spreading the DIY free party culture and direct action for sustainable technology. Since 2004, Blackkat and Jungle Terror Krew have continued the mischief with Renegade Virus and TBI25 in NYC … while 5lowershop, HavocSound, and soFat! have been raging in SF with S.P.A.Z. and Army of Love – constructing walls of sound and yards of power cable at AMF, Monsters of Love, Unchained Reaction, Fuck Parade, renegade outdoor, indoor, mobile, and underground free parties all over SF/NYC/USA. These non-profit crews have sustained where many other well-funded businesses have come and gone as a result of their experiments in alternative technologies. The consistent message of building a more concious culture is further demonstrated by the work these people have done in the science of sustainable living on this planet and grassroots outreach and education in the community. All the crews mentioned have been in involved with converting all their tour buses and generators to run on straight vegetable oil, teaching workshops in biofuel systems and sustainability skills, mobile microbroadcasting, and a weekly internet broadcast with FM radio rebroadcast in England and Europe.

Spiral Tribe vs. the Public Order

Free parties became a big issue in the UK and Europe during the early 90’s when large gatherings of people would assemble with concert speakers and have a free dance party. To outlaw this type of noncommercial music festival (there were no camping fees, or tickets sold, you just had to be able to get there, and feed yourself for the duration), the Parliament of the UK created the Criminal Justice Act in 1994. Ironically, the main focus of this Act was to restrict and prohibit “anti-social” behaviors, including organizing and attending huge gatherings centered around a common interest in popular music. It even included a section based on the type of music considered anti-social – repetitive beats – and used a precise definition of how many bars of music had to pass without a beat looping and/or repeating! Spiral Tribe challenged the Act and held massive outdoor events with live performances of hypnotically repetitive beats. The UK punk band, Crass, contributed their social commentary with a furious double kick drum beat that repeated until you thought your heart might collapse. The wall of speakers that Spiral Tribe carried to these events was the length and height of 3-4 city bus coaches long and tall. When Crass played, the drums would be a barrage of punches shooting out of that wall. 13 members of Spiral Tribe were arrested immediately following the Castlemorton Common Festival in May 1992 for public order offenses. The techno-punk crew seemed to be having a blast doing as much damage to the legal system as possible. The courtroom became a circus. The defendants, and their supporters in the benches, wore Tshirts to their court appearances with the message “Breach The Peace” written in large letters. The message was seen in every photograph and television news coverage of the case. Especially handy if you released a record with the same name, which Spiral Tribe had. They released albums of fantastic techno, with deejays chatting over some tracks. Forward The Revolution blends the steady beat of Native American drumming with the excited heart beat of their drummachines and the Native Am. singing with Simone’s flawless humanoid rapping about the future of the free party system. She defiantly repeats, “You might stop the party, But you can’t stop the future.” At the end of the 4 month long case, it was calculated that this was the longest running and most expensive case in British legal history. Just to stop the music.

blogging blues

finally!

at long last, i am finally catching up with all of my work – my regular job, my freelancing, my reviews…
i apologize immensely for the long delay with exciting posts this week.  i wrote a rather fantastic one, from my heart – i even wrote a little blues song – detailing what was goin on here, and somehow wordpress just lost it on its way to the front page.  i will try to recap here, but the song is lost for good.

last week, i was uprooted from my regular routine, and delivered right into the chaotic middle of another reality.  i don’t know if i aspire to spend more time in the other dimension, but i got a great glimpse into the world of book publishing when i was asked to contribute to a new project.  new to me, however, the book is due to be in stores this fall!  so i will be scrambling to meet sudden deadlines these next few weeks.  i will do my best to ensure that the news and reviews on this site do not lag too much.  i have spent way too much of my time editing this ISIS concert review, so in the future, i intend to concentrate on the writing aspect, and enlist help with editing.

this new project will likely influence the direction of posts here, so you might see more dancehall, more dub, reggae, jungle, soundsystem info here.  i will be concentrating on background and history, so this will be quite a diversion from news.  and a welcome balance if i do say so.

still to come, but from now on no suggested timelines to kill myself over :

  • a concert review from the SF performance by Sonic Boom (Spectrum, Spacemen3, E.A.R.) – with 1-2 minute movies!  the concert was great!  i can’t wait to share the movies!
  • i am attempting to get my own URL for this blog.  i think i can continue to keep this one active, while just adding it to the new site, but i haven’t figured that out yet.  we’ll see.  i mainly just want more control over css and the ability to use fun flash stuff.  i feel like this site lacks having access to the music itself.

in a blatant effort to captivate your subconcious attention….

i thoroughly enjoyed the ISIS/Jesu/Zozobra concert in sf this past friday. i have some decent photos and a review that i am almost finished editing. i will be posting all of it here within the next 24 hours.

i wish i could have it up already, but i’ve been swamped with projects lately. all of these posts lately have been work related for me, hence the mainstream acts getting so much attention. i will soon have more time to publish “under the radar” metal music. so stay tuned, i’m just kindling this blog fire at the moment.

Global Academy Of Electronica Skills

every year since 2002, the Red Bull Academy has gathered an overwhelming roster of teachers and pupils together from around the globe to share skills, knowledge, experience, equipment, and philosophy.

Wyl Menmuir published this on the FLY website at the end of last week actually, but i just noticed it today. there is still plenty of time to check out this Academy idea, mull it over, and then apply, so i wanted to share it with you right away!

The Toronto Red Bull Academy 2007 kicks off this April with Info Sessions across the UK from DJs, producers and musicians.

Some of the UK’s most promising hip-hop, soul, broken beat, dubstep, D&B artists will be headed out to Toronto as part of the Academy, which offers an insight into music making today.

Music makers, producers and DJs can apply to be jetted to Toronto for two weeks in September and October to get tuition from the likes of Bob Moog, Phonte from Little Brother, the Mizell Brothers and twenty-year-old dubstep DJ, Skream. The emphasis is on creating, with a combination of live performances in the host city and lectures in studios.

The Academy is running taster days across the UK in April for anyone interested with talks from Four Tet (London), Greg Wilson (Leeds), Alex Smoke (Glasgow) and Waajeed (Platinum Pies Pipers, Detroit) in Birmingham. As all the sessions are free it’s a win win for anyone wanting to further their music making.

there are many more big names and amazing info sessions, workshops, and after parties in more international cities than what i have listed here. the site is coded in a flash player, so i have to hand copy each name and place, so instead, i am encouraging you, nudging you, pressuring you to go check the calendar! especially if you are in melbourne, europe, or south america. i did not see anything planned for any US cities, but there were at least 2 or 3 events in Canada. there will also an info session and equipment tour held in the Tuff Gong recording studios in Jamaica!

The dancehall/hip-hop hybrid of Jahdan and 77Klash

In the two decades between the disco days of Tony Manero and the hipster colonization of Williamsburg, no music made itself more at home in Brooklyn than reggae/dancehall. Sure, WKTU-style freestyle fueled portions of the borough during the ’80s and early ’90s but, ever since a wave of Jamaican immigrants began settling in Flatbush during the late 1970s, the rumbling low-end of reggae “riddims” and the sound of rapid-fire patois have given Central Brooklyn its colorful vibe.

As the area became home to the thickest concentration of Jamaican people outside of the islands, local sound systems (the mobile DJ crews that form the backbone of dancehall music and culture) quickly sprouted to keep locals abreast of the latest one-drop riddims, sweet lovers rock and badman 45s from “yard.” Buoyed by the international success of locally-based producers like Jah Life and Philip Smart, NY-based “deejays” (rappers, or “toasters”; in dancehall, the record-spinning DJs are known as “selectors”) Mikey Jarrett, Louie Rankin and Red Fox landed record deals in the early 1990s. But, ever since Shaggy bussed out of Flatbush in 1993 with “Oh Carolina,” (and ultimately became dancehall’s first major pop crossover artist), records by Brooklyn-based dancehall artists have been few and far between.

Take a stroll down Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, though, and dancehall is more prevalent than ever; the kiosks on Flatbush Avenue remain devoted to the latest CDs from yard, and dancehall-centric venues like The Elite Ark in East New York and C-PAC in East Flatbush continue to be among the city’s most vibrant clubs. Central Brooklyn’s also home to about a half-dozen pirate radio stations predominantly spinning reggae. So why aren’t there more Brooklyn dancehall artists making noise?

The answer may lie in the borough’s contributions to hip-hop. Caribbean and non-Caribbean BK MCs from the Notorious B.I.G., Foxy Brown and Shyne to Lil’ Kim, Mos Def and Talib Kweli have all routinely colored their rhymes with patois, sampled reggae in their music and collaborated with Jamaica-based dancehall artists. Like Bobby Konders and Salaam Remi before him, local product and self-described “Remix King” DJ Obsession has made an art of reworking dancehall and soca vocal tracks for the hip-hop dancefloor.

“That amalgamation of reggae and hip-hop is Brooklyn music,” says Michael “Gize” Burrowes (aka 77Klash), a Crown Heights-based producer and deejay whose musical resume includes working with both hip-hop and reggae artists. “KRS-ONE and Slick Rick started it and then Brooklyn heisted it and made it it’s own. But that sound that people like Shyne have defines Brooklyn perfectly.”

Of course, all hip-hop can trace its roots directly back to Jamaica. When Kool Herc, the Jamaican-born DJ credited with creating hip-hop, began talking over funky breakbeats at Bronx parks and recreation centers, he was essentially just adapting sound system culture to a new milieu. Today, it’s routine for hip-hop artists from all over the country to collaborate with Jamaican dancehall artists and youth in Jamaica are more in touch with hip-hop and American culture than ever before. Dancehall, many purists now argue, sounds too much like hip-hop.

Still, Brooklyn remains home to its own unique sound clash, as evidenced by the work of 77Klash (spoken as “Two Sevens Clash,” the Rastafarian terminology for apocalypse) and Jahdan. Together, the two have teamed up with Manhattan-based production unit Team Shadetek for the aptly titled single, “Brooklyn Anthem” (Sound-ink). A Flatbush-based singjay (a vocalist combing elements of a singer and a toaster), Jahdan is a member of local reggae band Noble Society and previously collaborated with such Brooklyn hip-hop figures as Dead Prez, DJ Premier, X-Clan and the Boot Camp Clik. He was featured on Smif N Wessun’s classic 1994 track “Soundbwoy Bureil,” perhaps the ultimate example of the Brooklyn hip-hop/reggae hybrid. 77Klash, or Gize as he’s known when working behind the boards, is best known for producing the Scallawah riddim, the instrumental track which spawned Turbulence’s 2005 hit, “Notorious.” Both Jahdan and Gize had worked with East New York rapper Afu Ra and played in roots reggae bands with strangely similar names before linking up.

“Brooklyn Anthem” updates the notion of “Brooklyn music” by synthesizing not only dancehall and hip-hop but also UK grime, London’s interpretation of the Jamaica/hip-hop interface. Team Shadetek’s beats are heavily influenced by UK grime, and the 808 drum machine claps on “Brooklyn Anthem” evoke Lethal B’s “Pow,” which might be the only grime track to have touched mainstream American radio.

Whatever the producers’ aims, the vocalists are clearly trying to reach their BK brethren at home. Jahdan’s chorus co-opts aspects of Courtney Melody’s rebel anthem “Dangerous” while 77Klash reminds us, among other things, that “Brooklyn girls are the sexiest.”

“Cats need something to feel proud that they’re from Brooklyn,” Gize/Klash explains. “Brooklyn really needs a vibe, ‘cause there ain’t nothing popping [dancehall-wise] here right now.”

They’re clearly onto something. It’s unclear if he was aware of the Shadetek song but Jamaican dancehall star and frequent Brooklyn visitor, Vybz Kartel, recently recorded a “Brooklyn Anthem” of his own. While it’s not yet pressed up as a single, that track is already making waves at area clubs.

Sensing their chemistry, Jahdan and 77Klash plan to continue collaborating with one another. “I ain’t going to let this commercial American scene go without knowing that dancehall, reggae music runs the fuckin’ place,” Jahdan explains. “We have to bring the light to it now and make people know that [reggae and hip-hop] are one and the same. It is just business and the monopolies that tried to separate it. The whole thing is divide and conquer, seen?”
