Stop The Impending Silence Of Net Radio!

Posted by Molli Fire on Monday, 25June07

This message is so important that I have decided to repost it with some extra information. SaveNetRadio.org has declared a Day of Silence for internet radio broadcast on Tuesday June 26th. The stations that participate will give listeners only a taste of what it will be like after July 15th if the increased royalty rate is upheld. Internet Radio Day Of Silence 2007 Stations that go silent will likely include Pandora, Live 365, Yahoo LAUNCHcast, and MTV Online, and NPR member stations. These stations, plus others like AccuRadio, Radioio, Digitally Imported, Rhapsody and many more would be seriously impacted by retroactive royalty increases equal to 50-300% of the station’s current revenue income. In Rhapsody, Pandora and Live365’s cases, the increase would also penalize their multiple channels platform, causing rate increases equal to more than 1000% of their current revenue. 1000%! According to the RAIN (Radio And Internet Newsletter):

Webcasters will be alerting their listeners that “silence” is what Internet radio may sound like on or shortly after July 15th, the day on which 17 months’ worth of retroactive royalty increase payments are due to the SoundExchange collection organization under the terms of a recent Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) decision.

Read more about the situation on the RAIN website and check out SaveNetRadio.org for more options of what you – the listener, the musician, the dj, the webcaster – can do to help.

Rock N Roll Til The Day I Die

Posted by Molli Fire on Friday, 15June07

Young@Heart rocks! I saw this article on yahoo news and I thought it was going to be some kind of “senior citizens find reason to live through rock n roll” but I was quite wrong! It turns out that the 23 elders that comprise the Young@Heart Chorus are putting an all new edge on some of rock’s biggest hits.

Rockin At Heaven's Door With The Young At Heart Chorus
Elaine Fligman of the Young@Heart Chorus giving it her all:

The morbid messages in some of rock’s great anthems takes on a serious tone when sung by those toe-ing the line between here and the afterlife, while teen-age dimentia becomes hilarious when belted out by the well-senile. Take for example –

“My future is static / It’s already had it.” — Steve Martin, 79, singing Sonic Youth‘s “Schizophrenia.”

Or contemplating life and death with the Clash‘s “Should I Stay or Should I Go.” I had never heard of them before today, but apparently they are international stars and tour around the world. They have even performed for the king and queen of Norway!

Under the direction of wheelchair-bound Fred Knittle, the Young@Heart Chorus is trying to record a full length album of such covers, tentatively to be titled Rockin’ At Heaven’s Door. HAha! I LOVE it! These seniors rule, and if you aren’t convinced, then I am just doing a poor job representin. Check out the full story on yahoo news.

Citysol – Live Music Via Solar Power, Biodiesel

Posted by Molli Fire on Friday, 15June07

Perhaps you recall, waaaaaaay back at the beginning of April, I reported that Solar One and Brooklyn Vegan had teamed up to organize an FREE weekend-long event for NYC. At the time, they were still looking for volunteers, including bands, to help out. The people of NYC responded and the result is an awareness raising, green energy, arts, and music festival that will be completely powered by solar power and bio-diesel generators! Today Brooklyn Vegan announced the lineup and other goodies one can participate in during the weekend of July13-15th. For example, you can bring your energy bill to the event and switch on the spot to a green plan with ConEdison. In return you receive credit for free beer at the concert! Or, simply bring a mug and get $1 off beer! These folks know the right language to speak when talking about improving the environment!
Here is the digs from Brooklyn Vegan:

Brooklyn Vegan & Solar One present Citysol:

Brooklyn Vegan Presents Citysol

A FREE SHOW on SATURDAY JULY 14 (1pm-10pm) in NYC w/
LES SAVY FAV (!!)
Land Of Talk (previously announced)
O’Death (yeah)
The Besnard Lakes (previously announced)
These Are Powers (ex-Liars)
The Budos Band (funky)
Frankpollis (starring Jackson)
plus a very special performance from OCDJ
(Dance Party until the solar goes out!)

@ Solar One at Stuyvesant Cove Park – located along the East River between 18th and 23rd Streets. Solar One sits in the north end of the park, near the 23rd Street entrance and the Gulf Gas station.

Righteous! There is so much excellent information to discover, it would be difficult to reproduce all of it here, so go over to the BV and check it out:

Welcome to the premier edition of HT-Rewind! Issue 001!

The Greatest Hits from the first week of June:

Drones Of The Dour – Sunn O))), Wolf Eyes, Wolves In The Throneroom, Merzbow, Weedeater Shows

Sunn O))) announced a string of West Coast US shows with the incredibly talented Wolves In The Throneroom bringing furious black metal along and Southern Lord label mates Weedeater. Sunn O))) also announced that they will play the Super Sonic Fest in UK alongside Mogwai and Miasma, as well as the Dour Festival with previous tour mates Wolf Eyes plus Merzbow and Wilco.

Sunn O))) To Release Oracle On Vinyl

Sunn O))) also announced that they will be releasing Oracle on vinyl. Brainwashed got a hold of the cd and has reviewed it with samplage.

Digitized – Bob Marley’s Exodus Gets A Futuristic Release

Exodus turns 30 this year, and to celebrate Island will be reissuing the entire album on USB stick, Micro SD, deluxe cd, cd, and vinyl. The first 3 come with video footage of Bob Marley and the Wailers performing live in London in 1977. The vinyl will be reissued as an exact replica of its first release.

Dope New 50/50 Video From Wiley!

Eski Boy makes a smokin video for “50/50” from his upcoming Playtime Is Over and HearingTest has the links to a crystal clear mov format. It positively sparkles, and comes rumbling out of the subwoofers! In addition to the vid, the sweet fellas over at Big Dada have sent us a link to where you can get your own Wiley player. It’s sweet too, I wish I could show you here, but WordPress does not allow embedding of players other than a few like yT. But trust me, go check it out, it has the video for “50/50” plus audio for “Gangsters” and “Bow E3”. It’s a clever likkle device –
www.bigdada.com/wileyplayer/

December ATP – Portishead, Aphex Twin, Earth, Julian Cope And More

Yep, all those folks are on the lineup. What isn’t obvious from the beginning of this report is that the second part features an album review by Julian Cope for one of the most amazing dark ambient metal bands – Sacrificial Totem. The album that Cope reviewed is Hurqalya which can be found on Katabatik. All fans of ambient noise, ambient metal, and atmospheric sonic storytelling should definitely check this out. Katabatik releases albums and hosts concerts with bands who create unique sonic experimentations. Their catalogue ranges from experimental electronica to IDM to ambient, metal, ragtime, and glitch-core. Definitely a fine resource of music.

NME Offers Free White Stripes Record In Magazine This Week

A limited edition red vinyl picture disc of “Rag And Bone” from the White Stripes’ upcoming Icky Thump was included in this week’s issue of NME. More info and pictures in the report.

Killer tunes, mostly original stuff and remixes from the likes of Matt Shadetek, Drop The Lime, Plastician etc. Originally mixed for BBC’s Mary Anne Hobbs show, this is the first time its been available for download, and it’s FREE! If you like what you hear, show your love and buy some vinyl and keep it spinning!

Glen E Friedman Releases Fugazi Photos

Another fantastic picture book from the super talented Friedman. This report has links to where you can find other books by Friedman on Burning Flags Press.

Blue Scholars Video For “Back Home” From Bayani

The song rules, the video rules. Go check it out. It’s about bringing our troops home to their families where they belong.

Dragons Exist And So Do Ninjas

Ninja Tunes found a rare master tape from 1970 of psychedelic surf rock by the Dragons. Dennis Dragon is known for his work composing soundtracks for 1970’s skate films, surf films, ski films, and more. This is such an epic story of the Dragon Brothers and how they were just too far ahead of the music business in the 70’s. If you read nothing else, read this. Okay, maybe just this, Shadetek, and Wiley.

Whew! What a week! And this is just the highlights! ENJOY!

This week’s news is brought to you by the letter D

Beastie Boys Win Webby Award For “I F***ing Shot That”

Posted by Molli Fire on Friday, 8June07

On Tuesday the Beastie Boys were honored with Artist of the Year at the 11th Annual Webby Awards. They received this award for their innovative idea in 2006 of incorporating user-generated content into their live concert film, notoriously known as Awesome, I F***ing Shot That. The Beastie Boys movie was compiled entirely of footage created by the audience with cameras that were distributed at the concert.

The Webby Award also chose them in part for their work and loud advocation of more flexible copyright laws and a share-alike attitude with their own music. David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards, described the Beastie Boys’ audience interaction enthusiastically when he stated:

“From the Internet to video to music, Beastie Boys have created a totally unique, two-way relationship with their fans… They embody the kind of collaboration and exchange of ideas that the Web is all about.”

It’s true. Just check out their official website with its own page dedicated to making Beastie Boys vocal A Cappellas available for fans to create remixes. Their website also has a tour diary, a studio cam, and a blog where they post the kinds of things that they are getting kicks from, like the fantastic G.I. Joe PSA by Eric Fensler or clips from Sesame Street.

The Webby Awards have a strict 5-word acceptance speech rule, and this is how the Boys worked it:

Can anyone fix my computer?

Hint: go to the blog and watch the G.I. Joe PSA, for reals….

For more fab 1 liners, go to the Webby Awards speeches page. For more BBoys photos from the event, go to this Picture Page. Other Award winners included LonelyGirl15, Halcyon, Ask A Ninja, and many more!

Glen E Friedman Captures Fugazi For New Book

Posted by Molli Fire on Thursday, 7June07

Fugazi probably looks fantastic through the lens of glen E. friedman‘s camera. We’ll soon find out – when Keep Your Eyes Open is available to explore.

Glen E Friedman Captures Fugazi - Keep Your Eyes Open

It’s a book of photographs of the legendary punk band by an artist who is well known for capturing the most exciting action on still film.  Whether he’s aiming at pioneer skaters Jay Adams or Tony Alva, or frenetic stage performers Minor Threat or Beastie Boys, Friedman’s camera has excellent perspective.  This man has shot it all, and has the talent to portray the raw energy of the live experience.  My esteem for both Fugazi and Friedman is in the upper atmosphere of esteem layers due to both going beyond what is necessary for their careers and truly caring about the audience’s experience of their medium.  It will be wonderful to see the large glossy pages of this upcoming coffee table tome.  I think I will have to add this to my wishlist!

The book will be officially released on the 3rd of September, 20 years on the day of the band’s first live show. (ISIS and Neurosis like to think they are veterans for being 10 years old, but 20 years and still touring, playing, and being super cool, that’s Fugazi…)

FUGAZI BOOK LINKS

Keep Your Eyes Open website
Burning Flags Press – You can catch up so much great gEfriedman memorabilia on the Burning Flags page including his other new photo books like RECOGNIZE with words by Peter Lamborn Wilson (aka Hakim Bey author of T.A.Z.).
Burning Flags Press even has a music$pace page where you can watch rare punk and protest videos, and see pages from the books.

Uber-Cool Designs To Wear, Show Your LOVE For HT!!

Posted by Molli Fire on Friday, 1June07

One of my favorite design communities – Threadless – busted out this week with new contests and new releases as part of their Wear I $pent My Summer Vacation Sale. By the end of the weekend, someone is going to win an ipod and digital camera, and everyone will find great designs by so many fabulous artists- on smooth american apparel shirts for as low as $10! Ten frickin US dollars! And they will be releasing another new design everyday until June 3rd.

I’m particularly fond of this one that I bought on sight (I’m actually wearing it as I write this):

Threadless Design Community Summer Sale

Aww YEAH! Iz gonna be a Beat Street Beat Down!!

That’s not all… By coincidence, I submitted a slogan for a tshirt idea this week. It’s a sweet little philosophical one-liner that I have used for years in conjunction with my solo music project. If you want to make a dedicated music journalist super happy, vote to get it printed as a tshirt. Check-check-check it out y’all:

Robots don’t leave fingerprints

Click the slogan there to vote!

You need to sign in or sign up for a Threadless account, but go ahead, you’ll need one to order anyhow. If you get a chance to tell them who referred you, my Threadless name is robotanist . For those not familiar with the Threadless community, they RULE! Check out the next contest coming up – they are seeking Tshirt design submissions inspired by “awkward love” in celebration of the quirky romance comedy Eagle vs. Shark… The regular contests are located behind the big red heart at the top of the page. If you don’t see it, hover over “Participate” and you will see the heart to the right. So go ahead, find something cool to wear to the show next weekend, and enter to win some cool prizes! Thanks for your support! If I win this slogan contest, I will have some credit to spend on Tshirts, which means HearingTest will definitely be having a contest with Tshirt prizes!!
Enjoy your Threadless Summer Vacation!

Smaller Internet Radio Stations Get Extension On Rate Increase

Posted by Molli Fire on Tuesday, 22May07

Hurray for the dedicated supporters of internet radio broadcasting!!! We have achieved at least a small victory today, and hopefully it will serve as precedent to achieve bigger victories in the near future!

The announcement came down the vine today that SoundExchange (who i thoroughly reported about here) has offered a reduced royalty rate to “smaller” webcasters. We can only hope that this will further translate into no royalty rate for those stations that are able to prove that they do not broadcast music that incurs any royalty at all. You may recall that previous decisions had included a $500 minimum fee for every station plus royalty fees even for strictly talk-based radio. The new decision states that smaller stations on the web will owe 10% of revenues up to $250K and 12% of revenues over $250K. For stations that already pay royalties and fully comply to this system, this will come as a great relief. However, the language of the press release leads one to think that this may be a temporary fix to give smaller net stations a chance to catch up before being hit with the original plan of increased royalty rates. Let’s not even get started on how the government considers this a “subsidy” to small webcasters to help them get their business built up enough to afford the big fees, rather than a free speech or freedom of access to non-commercial music. So, the struggle to keep internet radio accessible to all has not yet been won…

Evidence From Trail Of Destruction/TS002

Posted by Molli Fire on Sunday, 13May07

Well, it sure took awhile for me to finish editing and uploading the fotos and videos from the last 5lowershop shindig, but alas, here they are!

Doormouse, End.User, Kontroversy 396, Arson, Bonk, HRock, 666 Gangstaz, the_Stapler_, Planetsize, Rtype, Fishstix, Heartworm CELEBRATE THE RECORD RELEASE OF TEEN SUICIDE 002

this was the flyer for the event:

end-door-user-mouse-flyer.jpg

I apologize that so much of the foto and video footage is so dark…it is after all an underground warehouse with minimal lighting except for cool trippy stuff that doesn’t translate well to film.

here are the fotos:

Sorry!  Fotos will be back tomorrow.

AND here are the videos:

this one is my favorite: it’s 5am at this point, listen to the crowd still cheering & yelling!

Thanks to everyone who came out an supported this event! Thanks to all the performers – every single one ROCKED the house! This party was off the hook fun until at least 7am! thanks to Doormouse and End.User for traveling to SF to show us a good time! Thanks to local heroes Kontroversy 396, Arson, Bonk, Heartworm, and Fishstix! AND A HUGE BIG UPS AND CONGRATULATIONS TO RTYPE – for getting Teen Suicide 002 pressed to gorgeous vinyl, mastered by the one and only Tim Xavier! Also BIG UPS & THANKS to the Teen Suicide 002 superstars – HROCK, 666 GANGSTAZ, THE_STAPLER_, & PLANETSIZE r.i.p………

To everyone else- you missed out, your only redemption is to be at the next 5lowershop bru-ha.

Here is the info on the record release, Teen Suicide 002 :

previews of the tracks are available at http://www.myspace.com/teensuicide

Teen Suicide 02 – Welcome to Bayshore EP
Four tracks showcasing the best breakcore, hardcore and jungle artists
associated with San Francisco’s 5lowershop soundsystem.

666Gangstaz – Tricknology
A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, a hop, skip, and a jump away from Detroit,
Todd Cook (aka 666Gangstaz aka DJ Crackhouse aka the Slime Lord) grew up
equally influenced by Jeff Mills as Soundmurderer and SK-1. His track
“Tricknology” combines the frenetic chaos and vst trickery of breakcore and
IDM with the bass and tempo of dubstep and techno. Don’t worry, a DJ
friendly intro/outro will make it a snap to mix in.

H-Rock – This One is for Ramo (Julian’s Reprise)
Victor Evans is fast becoming a rising star in hardcore techno. His track on
the first Teen Suicide melted clubs from Rotterdam to San Francisco. This
track is even better. A dedication to the movie Beat Street and graffiti
writers worldwide, this track caused teenaged girls to hug and kiss each
other with excitement in Portland. I swear, I was there. H-Rock produces
speedcore and noise as Vankmen. The “H-Rock vs Vankmen EP” is scheduled to
be released as Teen Suicide 04, as well as a debut release on Fathme
Records, good friends of ours. Look out!

The Stapler – Coldf33t
The Staper (aka DJ FVK aka SoFat! Soundsystem aka DJ Heathrow) was first
exposed to ragga jungle and hardcore through squat parties in London’s
notorious Hackney Wick. After moving back to New York City,
the Stapler started SoFat! Soundsystem, playing the finest in dub, ragga
jungle and breakcore. Now a resident of San Francisco, the Stapler has been
producing original and distinctive ragga jungle. You don’t need a duthmaster
to enjoy this, you’ll be hooked with the first bass note.

Planetsize – Binary Brotha
This record is dedicated to the memory Planetsize. A close friend to
everyone involved with Teen Suicide Records and 5lowershop soundsystem, he
passed away shortly before this record came out. “Binary Brotha” is
definitely the most insane track on the record. Breakcore without limits and
designed to rock a soundsystem, the track is also a reminder of what we
lost.

New Colours For Hearing, New Sounds For Viewing

Posted by Molli Fire on Wednesday, 9May07

ALLLLL RIGHT!

Please let me know if you prefer this theme/layout/color palette more or less than the previous black and white one. i feel like this one is a little easier to navigate, but i like the style of the other one better. colours on this one are optional. i hope to completely renovate the colour scheme soon, because i want to use an energy-saving palette. that’s where most of the screen is dominated by dark colours, with the text and links in medium-light colours. this significantly reduces the amount of energy used while viewing, because it requires less illumination. so, that will be a big site overhaul, and this one is temporary. i would just like to know what works best for people, and what totally does not work, so i can work those suggestions into the new style…..

and thanks to those who emailed and commented in the last month, your feedback has been delightful!

if you head over to the HearingTest youtube channel, you will get a sneak peak at the videos that i will be posting up soon. they are short little videos taken at the Teen Suicide 002 Record Release Party on April 27, 2007. i will be posting them along with a slideshow of pix as soon as i finish resizing the photos.

enjoy!

The Onion Holds Wilco CD Release Party In SF

Posted by Molli Fire on Wednesday, 9May07

As far as i know, Wilco will not be physically attending this party, but one never knows. However, The Onion is throwing a special bash at the Boom Boom Room the day that the new Wilco is released, and Amoeba is supplying the CDs. The Onion’s super secret Events Newsletter said : (decoded by iVi for your viewing enjoyment. i don’t think it will explode 10 seconds later…)

wilco

After throwing release parties for Wilco’s live CD and Jeff Tweedy’s DVD, you’d think The Onion might have had its fill of Wilco-related events. No way. On Wednesday, May 16, watch us prove everyone wrong as we celebrate the release of Wilco’s new Sky Blue Sky at the Boom Boom Room. Enjoy drink specials while we play the new album, and thanks to Amoeba Music, you’ll have a chance to buy Sky Blue Sky on-site. Wilco’s label, Nonesuch, has kindly donated a prize package to be raffled that includes Wilco merchandise, Wilco’s entire pre-Sky Blue Sky catalog, and a new iPod. Not bad for a Wednesday.

Digg Community Digs Grave For Digg

Posted by Molli Fire on Thursday, 3May07

Undertaker, build me a coffin.  No, no, no, make that 2.  One for the selector blogger, one for the mourner Digger…

digg-guy.png

The biggest story on the web today concerns a user revolt on the popular bookmark site, Digg. It started when somebody published a hack code that removes the copy-protection from HD DVDs. Naturally, this became big news and was a top post on Digg among many other bookmark sites. According to Digg staff member, Jay Adelson :

We’ve been notified by the owners of this intellectual property that they believe the posting of the encryption key infringes their intellectual property rights.

Digg then proceeded to delete the posts that contained the hack code, and suspend the members who posted it. As it turns out, the community who participates in Digg, without which Digg would not exist, being that it is a social bookmarking site decided to make it crystal clear who decides the news. Digg was bombarded with posts that contained the code, and had to make a decision – wholesale deletion and suspension, or give in to the masses. i’ll let Digg’s founder, Kevin Rose tell you what they did :

In building and shaping the site I’ve always tried to stay as hands on as possible. We’ve always given site moderation (digging/burying) power to the community. Occasionally we step in to remove stories that violate our terms of use (eg. linking to pornography, illegal downloads, racial hate sites, etc.). So today was a difficult day for us. We had to decide whether to remove stories containing a single code based on a cease and desist declaration. We had to make a call, and in our desire to avoid a scenario where Digg would be interrupted or shut down, we decided to comply and remove the stories with the code.

But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.

If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.

Digg on,

Kevin

There you have it. The power of the people always wins when they unite to overwhelm the system. Of course, it helps if it is a system that you actually want to destroy. Personally, i always thought that Digg was corrupt. It has been pretty well documented that the system is rigged.

Viva La Revolucion!

personally, i’m just too anti-social to get that involved in social bookmarking. this blog has been a big leap for me. don’t get me wrong, i have a great circle of friends who are amazing, and we organize shows, play music, and all that, so i guess i’m social…. it’s the networking i don’t really get into much….
