Always at the forefront of revolution – the 30th anniversary of Bob Marley’s Exodus is being celebrated with the album’s release on the new music formats USB Memory Stick and Micro SD Memory Card. Marley has entered the Matrix. 4000 copies of the USB version in glorious red, green and gold include the entire album of music plus 3 video tracks recorded in June 1977 at the Rainbow Theatre in London during Marley’s exile in Britain.
Here is “Exodus” being performed live in full funky style with the whole band, the ladies, the love:
The Micro SD version would be even more limited – only 2000 copies. But that’s not all, the album will be released in ALL the old fashioned formats, except cassette tape, sorry. There will be a regular CD, a deluxe CD with a DVD of 12 live songs from the Rainbow Theatre shows, and a 12″ vinyl record packaged as an exact replica of the original issue in 1977.
1. Natural Mystic
2. So Much Things To Say
4. The Heathen
7. Waiting In Vain
8. Turn Your Lights Down Low
9. Three Little Birds
10. One Love/People Get Ready
BIG UPS ISLAND!!! That’s what I call respect.
Thanks to Uncut News for the info.

3 artists were honored this year at the International Reggae and World Music Awards – Half Pint, Gregory Isaacs, and Doug E Fresh all took home the special Producer’s Respect Award. Half Pint has worked with King Jammy, Bobby “Digital” Dixon, Steelie & Cleevie among many other big name producers to beautifully combine the best elements of reggae and ragga music styles. The riddims feature the pounding bass beats and steppers rhythms of ragga/dancehall while Half Pint’s vocals have the uplifting positive vibrations of reggae and ska. Gregory Isaacs continues to bring soul to roots reggae music, producing hit after hit since he first took the stage in the early 70’s. Both artists are Jamaican legends due to consistently keeping a positive in rebel music. One of Half Pint’s first singles, “Winsome” was covered by the Rolling Stones in 1987. Other big hits include “Greetings” (one of my favorites!), “Freedom Fighter”, and “Level The Vibes”. Gregory Isaacs has sung absolutely amazing soulful songs such as “Night Nurse” which was remixed by Kruder & Dorfmeister into a powerful, emotional tune that will floor you if you listen to it on a good soundsystem, “Gone A Jail” which seems to be sung exclusively for Shockout Records (Oakland CA!), and “Clash”. Everything that Isaacs sings is dripping with emotion and soulful crooning…

The freshly released Reggae Festival Guide 2007 announces this non-reggae festival which I think many California readers would enjoy. The lineup includes the smoking hot Ivan Neville and Leo Nocentelli as part of the New Orleans Social Club. And on that note, Ivan Neville was AMAZING amazing amAzing last night at the MOG Anniversary party! He had 3 keyboards in a stack and looked like his was dribbling some mean bball the way his hands were bouncing. The entire band brought the N’arlins funk and heat to a starved SF scene. It was excellent, too bad if you missed it, definitely jump at any opportunity to see Ivan Neville, Zigaboo Modeliste, George Porter Junior, and Renard Poche. Like at this festival in Sonoma for example:
I don’t want to leave out any important details, so here is the script, straight from the guide:
Health and Harmony Festival
June 8, 9, 10, 2007
Sonoma County Fairgrounds
As the earth spins toward the summer solstice, people naturally feel a need to come together outside and celebrate – it’s hardwired into our instincts. Last year’s Festival was the largest and most successful ever, and just to make sure this year is even better, the Festival organizers have gone into partnership with the institution that defined concert production nationwide, Northern California’s own Live Nation (formerly Bill Graham Presents). Said Festival Director Scott McKeown, “Combining the strengths of both organizations allows us to bring to the North Bay a world-class music and lifestyle festival as has never before been seen in Northern California.” It’s an unbeatable combination.
For the first time in the festival’s substantial history, Friday will offer a full day of music and events: three days, three nights, and three Main Stages full of fun and music.
Brian Wilson (of the Beach Boys), soul diva Erykah Badu, conscious hip-hop revolutionaries The Roots, Rickie Lee Jones, New Orleans Social Club (featuring Ivan Neville and the legendary Leo Nocentelli among others), and the cream of the jam band and acoustic world, including moe., Umphrey’s McGee, the Waybacks, Hot Buttered Rum, Animal Liberation Orchestra, the Mike Stern Allstars (featuring Victor Wooten of the Flecktones and Dennis Chambers along with Miles Davis guitarist Stern), Vernon Bush, New Monsoon, Common, and Sound Tribe Sector 9 lead the musical entertainment.
As always, there will be further music late at night with the “Harmony After Dark Zone,” featuring Jai Uttal, One at Last, Sheila Chandra, and Shimsai among many others. The “After Dark Zone” will be in three different venues for one modest price. Along with that, the Techno Tribal Dance, with Stanton Warrior, Shpongle, Ganga Girl, and Rabbit in the Moon among others, will go late with the very best of trance dance culture,
Of course, music is only one aspect of the 29th Harmony Festival, which will bring together many different facets of leading-edge information and approaches to healthier, more satisfying lifestyles with an amazing array of distinguished speakers, including Amy Goodman, Arianna Huffington, Edwin Black, Van Jones, and Rabbi Michael Lerner.
This year’s Festival theme is “Promoting Global Cooling.” Every conscious person is aware of the current planetary crisis, and forums, speakers, and exhibits will provide much valuable information; but the theme has a double meaning as it seeks to present an alternative, calmer worldview that seeks to cool down the currently over-heated and divisive partisan atmosphere in which these matters are being considered. Harmony means many things here, in musical, political, and spiritual terms, and the Festival is a holistic gathering that presents the most compelling advances in personal and social transformation, health, healing, ecology, art, activism, food, politics – in fact, the whole life package. It is a Party with a Purpose.

Emma Louise “Scout” Niblett should be gearing up for her performance at the upcoming Meltdown Fest (curated by Jarvis Cocker), or perhaps in the studio with Steve Albini, recording her upcoming full-length album. Instead, the Portland, Oregon based lady decided to take a detour and drop an egg. That’s right, an egg. A Dinosaur Egg! You can listen to her new song, “dinosaur egg”, over on her murdoch$pace page along with “just do it” and a cover of Cars’ “just what i needed”. The 3 songs comprise her new EP which Too Pure Records will send out on its own starting May 21st.
In the meantime, those within a few hours of GMT can catch Niblett in the midst of her tour leading up to Meltdown in London on June 20th, where she opens for Iggy and the Stooges! Dang that tour looks like too much fun! Is she also a judge for the Cannabis Cup while she’s out there?

The main person missing from this lineup, in my opinion, is G Love & the Special Sauce… now why aren’t you playing at this G? Well, this lineup has more happy music than blues anyway. Just goes to show, life in Canada is good. Even their bluesfests don’t sing the blues…

The legendary 70’s tv show, “WKRP In Cincinnati” will finally get released on DVD next week. But wait, don’t cheer yet – the very reason that it hasn’t been released before now, is pretty obscene, and hasn’t exactly been fixed.
Those of us who watched the show religiously (2 words – Loni Anderson) when it was still on network television, are quite aware that the entire show is about a radio station that plays popular music. That music had to be licensed for performance on the show. Those same licenses ran out ages ago, with no future in reruns or DVD releases. So, what has changed to enable the show to be released next week? Ok, just a warning, those who are easily offended or have anger management issues should click away from this post now. It’s about to get very offensive…..
The show could never be syndicated or aired as a rerun without paying for new licenses, which apparently cost so much now, that it renders the whole project unfeasible (i imagine they mean unprofitable, but no clarification on that). So great was the fear that the music industry inspired that most original copies were destroyed, to prevent even one accidental airing!!
How did MTM Enterprises, who originally distributed the show, get around this in order to release it on DVD? Did they take all the music out of the show entirely? Well, yes. Then they took it one horrible step further – they forced one of their employees to replace all the songs that you hear (on the station, as well as characters bursting into song) with generic muzak.
The poor fellow whom this mighty task fell on, describes the experience :
The new music that was inserted into the show sucked ass. It was wrong for the feel and attitude of the show. Some scenes relied on specific songs at particular junctures (i.e., Les Nessman trying on a toupee to the soundtrack of Foreigner’s “Hot Blooded”). Those scenes were ruined. In many instances, we couldn’t even finesse the proper audio levels in order to cut the costs of replacing the music.
But, at least MTM decided not to release it, probably because they agreed that it was too horrible of a travesty. Until Fox bought the company. Fox will release WKRP the muzak years on April 24th.
Way to go almighty copyright holders. You have successfully destroyed yet another popular artistic endeavor. Now I see why the world needs you to protect us and keep us safe from illegal performance….

In a hilarious NYTimes article, State Senator Bob Hagedorn, and the Colorado General Assembly, backtrack about the meaning of the John Denver song that they just proclaimed as the new additional state song. (It shares the title with Where Columbines Grow)
They want to make absolutely clear, that the Rocky Mountain High is an endorphin rush, but not the kind that is produced by illicit drugs. Instead, this kind comes from nature, guys fishing, and chocolate.
Read the full story, by Kirk Johnson, here.
i know that John Denver isn’t the kind of music that i usually post about, but this article is just too funny. the idea of congress people talking about what a rocky mountain high is well, HI-larious!
and, on that note, what does go on in Grandma’s Feather Bed? that song is graphic, yo.

Concord Music purchased Fantasy Records in 2006, and along with it came the infamous Stax catalogue. Stax is easily the richest source for soul music from the 60’s and 70’s, but maintains interest from new and old generations of music lovers today.
It’s no secret that Stax is enjoying a revival for its 50th anniversary, including events and artists representing at SXSW this year, and remastered releases for the fans. Today, March 13th, we are treated to the epic, 2 CD box set of 50 hits of remastered original recordings, “Stax 50th: 50th Anniversary Celebration”. According to the Stax50 website :
Stax 50 will formally inaugurate Concord Music’s re-launch of the legendary soul label. The set is packaged in a hardcover box with lenticular cover art of the famous snapping finger logo. The collection features Stax stalwarts, Otis Redding, Booker T & the MGs, Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Johnnie Taylor, Eddie Floyd, William Bell, Sam & Dave , The Dramatics, Little Milton, The Mar-Keys, Mel & Tim, Jean Knight, and The Emotions.
As if that wasn’t enough to keep your ears busy all month, the reactivated Stax Records is also presenting Carla Thomas, “The Queen Alone” due for release on March 20th! The description from Stax’s website describes this re-issue as :
The remastered reissue CD contains 5 previously unreleased tracks, plus liner notes by Stax historian Rob Bowman, author of the award-winning Soulsville U.S.A.: The Story of Stax Records.
Carla Thomas can be preordered from Concord Music Group’s website on this page, while the Stax 50th box set can be purchased now from this page.
Of course, both can be aquired from such popular music sites as amazon. The Stax 50th can also be downloaded from such places as emusic.
