Super Scout Niblett Strikes Again! Just Listen!

Posted by Molli Fire on Wednesday, 16May07

Emma Louise “Scout” Niblett should be gearing up for her performance at the upcoming Meltdown Fest (curated by Jarvis Cocker), or perhaps in the studio with Steve Albini, recording her upcoming full-length album. Instead, the Portland, Oregon based lady decided to take a detour and drop an egg. That’s right, an egg. A Dinosaur Egg! You can listen to her new song, “dinosaur egg”, over on her murdoch$pace page along with “just do it” and a cover of Cars’ “just what i needed”. The 3 songs comprise her new EP which Too Pure Records will send out on its own starting May 21st.

In the meantime, those within a few hours of GMT can catch Niblett in the midst of her tour leading up to Meltdown in London on June 20th, where she opens for Iggy and the Stooges! Dang that tour looks like too much fun! Is she also a judge for the Cannabis Cup while she’s out there?

Blue Scholars Make Real Hip Hop, Tour W.US

Posted by Molli Fire on Wednesday, 16May07

Blue Scholars are about to drop their second full length album, BAYANI, with Geologic on the mic and Sabzi kickin out the beats for some good ol’ fashioned Pacific Northwest hip hop. That’s the coastal Washington state area, for those not from around ‘ere. The duo are local favorites, who take the real, everyday situations of living in this day and age, and discuss them. No gangsta rap here, just economic oppression, and spiritual liberation. As the PNW free weekly paper, The Stranger puts it:

what you are most likely to experience as a human being in the world today, are the social and personal situations described on Bayani,

The Portland Mercury also offers a grandiose review of the album:

They are everything that Mos Def/the Roots/Common used to be—intelligent, progressive, skillful, and fun. MC Geologic boisterously raps about community, society’s ills, and the state of hiphop, all in a classic style somewhere between Aceyalone and Ras Kass. Producer extraordinaire Sabzi also reflects a classic style of traditional boom-bap, creating beats that would make Ali Shaheed Muhammad proud.

If that still isn’t enough to get you counting down the days until you can peel the plastic wrapper off your brand new copy, peep this review from Seattle Weekly AND go check out the absolutely free track, “Still Got Love”, from our fave blog friend, Analog Giant

You can pick up a copy of Bayani when it is available for retail from Blue Scholars’ online store, where you can also listen to and pick up their 2005 release, The Long March EP.

Explosions In The Sky Cancel Summer Tour

Posted by Molli Fire on Friday, 11May07

From the news page on Explosions In The Sky‘s website :

an apology

Hi everyone,

We have had to cancel all of our remaining summer shows (all shows scheduled for May, July, and August). We’re facing a serious illness in one of our families and traveling around the world and playing shows is just not an option for us at the moment.

We are truly sorry about this. We’ll try and keep in touch about when any of these shows might be made up or when we might be touring again.

As always, thanks for caring.

drat. that’s too bad… the page for shows on their site confirms that there are no shows scheduled at this time. The shows that were canceled were in the UK, Europe, and Taiwan.

Smashing Pumpkins Gets Robbed, Leaked, Hexed!

Posted by Molli Fire on Tuesday, 8May07

Smashing Pumpkins‘ rehearsal space at the Music Garage was robbed! Apparently the brilliant theives were not after guitars, amps and items of resale value, but rather were overzealous fans or professional leaksters who wanted memorabilia connected to the band’s upcoming release. Consequently, the photos were uploaded and linked on the Smashing Pumpkins fansite, Netphoria, which has been removed by the webmaster, and the criminals were locked away in a secure jail cell. The album in question, which will henceforth be called Evidence A, is called Zeitgeist and will be released on July 7th. That’s 07/07/07, exactly seven years since their last release! Unfortunately, it is only their 6th album. i almost wish they would release something before then, just to make it all 7’s….

Statement on the Music Garage Incident

As many of you are aware there was an incident here yesterday where an individual posted stolen pictures from the Smashing Pumpkins when they were rehearsing at the Music Garage. What this person did amounts to theft and band takes this very seriously as does Netphoria. I know everyone here is hungry for more information on the new album but this is not the way to go about it. Nobody here should condone or be supportive of the actions this individual took. It is unfortunate that the person choose Netphoria to leak these stolen works, Netphoria has always been a free and open forum without hard censorship but obviously in a case like this a line was crossed and I will not tolerate actions like this which is why numerous posts and threads were deleted last night. The band requested the stolen pictures be removed and I believe they are well within their right to do so. Anyone posting these pictures on the board, posting links to them or including them in your signature will be banned as a result. Despite this ugly event there may be some good to come out of it, some lines of communication have been opened and hopefully Netphoria & the Pumpkins will be able to offer something for the fans here, stay tuned….

Zeitgeist Tracklist:

01 Doomsday Clock
02 7 Shades of Black
03 Orchid
04 That’s the Way
05 Tarantula
06 Starz
07 United States
08 Never Lost
09 Bring the Light
10 Come On (Let’s Go)
11 For God and Country
12 Pomp and Circumstance

Smashing Pumpkins dates:

05-22 Paris, France – Grand Rex
05-24 Luxembourg City, Luxembourg – Den Atelier
05-26 Brussels, Belgium – Ancienne Belgique

Brightest Diamond, Broken Knee = Cult Heroine!

Posted by Molli Fire on Monday, 30April07

wow! talk about a work ethic! The lovely Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond is more punk rock than anyone else in the headlines today. This lady dislocated her knee, but sat down and finished the rest of the set! hard-core!
Asthmatic Kitty’s people confirm :

According to a spokesperson at Asthmatic Kitty, Shara “went for a rock jump during the song ‘Magic Rabbit’ and upon landing, dislocated her left knee. Worden finished out the song from the floor and then requested a chair and an icebag. She finished the set but was then carried off stage and taken to the hospital.”

AND, she’s not going to use it an excuse to not finish the rest of the tour either. No shows are being canceled! Here is the stellar move she was busting before the *snap* :

T.O.K. – New Album, European Tour Summer 2007

Posted by Molli Fire on Wednesday, 25April07

Inside sources say that the blazing hot dancehall quartet, T.O.K. are currently in the studio finishing up their 3rd album, which is unnamed as yet but due to be released this summer, and are also scheduling a tour around Europe. The tour will be only during the month of July and begins in the Netherlands. T.O.K. are famous for high energy performances that engage the crowd, so i’m sure this tour will be quite a treat for european audiences. I bet Germany especially extends a huge welcome to them when they roll through, since Germany has become quite the headquarters for dancehall music. Germany is the home of Germaican Records, Riddim Magazine, and hosted the 2006 World Soundclash.
i am currently on the hunt for more info about the new album and the tour. i will report back here with more details.
in the meantime, listen to T.O.K. music :

Totimoshi’s 3rd album, Ladron was produced by Page Hamilton (who also produces Helmet albums), and brings sludge metal, 70’s Sabbath style metal, and doom metal, all in one simple package. It is already available to the public, so if you like what you hear, go get it today. Oakland incubates no-frills die hard metal bands, and Totimoshi is no exception.

1. Ladron
2. In Virgo
3. The Dance Of Snakes
4. God Of Earth
5. Viva Zapata
6. A Weighted Line
7. To The Fire
8. The Hide
9. These Meanings
10. The Drunken Sun Forever Watching
11. The Shame

Track 01: Ladrón
Track 05: Viva Zapata

Their PR people describe this album :

Just off a West Coast tour w/ rock legends HELMET, Oakland, CA’s sludge-grunge-alt-hell-rock trio TOTIMOSHI are back w/ the follow-up to 2003’s “Monoli” and 2005’s re-issue of Mysterioso? to bring we mortals one of the heaviest and doom-ridden masterpieces the world of heavy rock has seen in way too long (no wonder bands like Helmet, Mastodon, Fu-Manchu, Kylesa, High on Fire, and the Melvins have tapped the band to tour and perform alongside on more than one occasion).

Bringing to mind some of history’s heaviest hitters (see Blue Cheer, Tool, Nirvana, Oxbow, Helmet), “Ladron’s” sludge-heavy guitar riffs, hugely-powerful bass-lines, and pummeling drums take their listener on a pseudo-psychedelic journey through space and time, and leave them wallowing in the depths of hell.

Add to that, this review from Stylus Mag:

“Run bongwater-soaked ’70s hard rock through Melvins and Sleep, sprinkle touches of blues and pop on top, and you have Totimoshi. This Oakland, CA trio does the stoner Sabbath thing as well as any band, but stands out with tones ranging from acoustic to twangy to fuzztones at 11. The group has a fearsome live reputation, and the nicely natural production (by Helmet’s Page Hamilton) hints at that.” – STYLUSMAGAZINE.COM

Pictures! Sonic Boom (Spacemen3, Spectrum) in SF

Posted by Molli Fire on Thursday, 19April07

So, this is actually just another tease…. I was lucky enough to see the wonderful performance by Sonic Boom in SF this month. Sonic Boom is the genius behind the aural experimentations known as E.A.R. and he is also the voice and half the music of Spectrum AND he is one of the Spacemen3. Busy Boy. Well, he is touring the US and has shows in the UK as i earlier posted about. The show at the Hemlock Tavern was fantastic! i will do my best to write a proper report about it this week. i will definitely have a series of 1-2 minute videos with sound to post up here very soon. i haven’t posted movies yet, so i might have to figure out how to do that within wordpress. Maybe it’s time to start a youtubular account….

Well, until i get the movies up, here is a little slideshow of the pix :

Ornette Coleman Wins Pulitzer + Europe Tour 2007

Posted by Molli Fire on Monday, 16April07

Alto-sax legend and free-jazz pioneer, Ornette Coleman received the 2007 Pulitzer Prize In Music for Sound Grammar.
Coleman is widely recognized as the pioneer of the free-jazz style with his major-label debut album in 1959, The Shape Of Jazz To Come on Atlantic Recordings. Nearly 50 years later, he recorded the album that would win the prestigous prize : his 2006 release, Sound Grammar. According to it’s review in All About Jazz in September 2006 :

Sound Grammar, a live set recorded in Germany in October 2005, features a quartet with his son Denardo on drums and two bassists—Gregory Cohen (picking); and Tony Falanga (bowing). The two-bass dynamic creates a texture that feels viscous and frictional at the same time, a perfect backdrop for the saxophonist’s piercingly resonant tone, which finds the “sound of expressed reality.”

Sound Grammar is Coleman’s first release in 10 years and surpasses studio recordings made at the peak of his career, in 1996. It is the first jazz album to be awarded a Pulitzer, and Coleman is only the second jazz artist to be awarded. Wynton Marsalis received one in 1997 for an oratory piece called “Blood on the Fields”, about slavery.

This is Ornette’s year! The esteemed musician was also awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievment Award, and Sound Grammar was a nominee for Grammy’s “Best Jazz Instrumental Album” in 2007.

Coleman and his quartet will be touring Europe plus a few US stops this summer. Dates are listed at the end of this post.

The webpage for the Pulitzer Prize In Music has more info on the award as well as the names of nominees for the category.
