Ozzy’s Star Shines In Birmingham

Posted by Molli Fire on Thursday, 17May07

Ozzy is making a move to stay at the top of the list of headlines this week! Within the last 24 hours, fellow MOGgers have posted news of Ozzy’s superb interview with the Telegraph and the official upload of the first single from his upcoming release, Black Rain, and here i am posting the latest Oz buzz :
Ozzy’s hometown of Birmingham is about to install its own Walk Of Fame, similar to the star-lined Walk in Hollywood. And who will they honour with the very first star on this stretch of glitter and gold?
Yep – Ozzy Osbourne will be inducted on the new Birmingham Walk Of Fame! Located on Broad Street, the star will be planted on July 6th, the same day that Ozzy plays his homecoming show at the National Indoor Arena.

More info, including how honoured the Lord Mayor of Birmingham is to be able to offer the first star to Ozzy, can be found at NME.

The Cribs’ Jarman Moshes To Subways

Posted by Molli Fire on Thursday, 17May07

You may recall a recent endorsement for The Subways on the Smashing Pumpkins’ mizzle$pace. Or perhaps you were already an avid fan of the UK band. Apparently they just held an intimate come-back gig at the Buffalo Bar in London, just before jetsetting off to the US to record their new album. The Subways played six new tracks at the London show, and even inspired The Cribs’ Ryan Jarman to jump in the mosh pit! Some of the new tracks that they tested on the crowd were “Kalifornia”, “Turnaround”, “Burst” and “Shake! Shake!”

Read more about the show, including quips from singer Billy Lunn, at NME.

Super Scout Niblett Strikes Again! Just Listen!

Posted by Molli Fire on Wednesday, 16May07

Emma Louise “Scout” Niblett should be gearing up for her performance at the upcoming Meltdown Fest (curated by Jarvis Cocker), or perhaps in the studio with Steve Albini, recording her upcoming full-length album. Instead, the Portland, Oregon based lady decided to take a detour and drop an egg. That’s right, an egg. A Dinosaur Egg! You can listen to her new song, “dinosaur egg”, over on her murdoch$pace page along with “just do it” and a cover of Cars’ “just what i needed”. The 3 songs comprise her new EP which Too Pure Records will send out on its own starting May 21st.

In the meantime, those within a few hours of GMT can catch Niblett in the midst of her tour leading up to Meltdown in London on June 20th, where she opens for Iggy and the Stooges! Dang that tour looks like too much fun! Is she also a judge for the Cannabis Cup while she’s out there?

The Cribs Video “Men’s Needs” Banned

Posted by Molli Fire on Friday, 11May07

The Cribs’ most recent video, “Men’s Needs” has been banned from television in London. Not because of the very-hot model from LA being completely naked (there are 2 versions of the video, the one with the black bars for privacy that they sent to MTV, and a “dirty” one which has full exposure). No, the video was banned because of ONE single complaint about the violence portrayed. It’s not so gory, really, it is intended to be farcical, but the previously mentioned hot model gal is mutilating herself to get the band’s attention. They ignore her, she cuts her arm off. While naked. The noir in you is curious, admit it.

VICE mag is the source.
Vice also has an interview with The Cribs on their VICE blog.

The banned:

dang, if this offended someone, they better not accidentally find the Yeah Yeah Yeahs website….

Explosions In The Sky Cancel Summer Tour

Posted by Molli Fire on Friday, 11May07

From the news page on Explosions In The Sky‘s website :

an apology

Hi everyone,

We have had to cancel all of our remaining summer shows (all shows scheduled for May, July, and August). We’re facing a serious illness in one of our families and traveling around the world and playing shows is just not an option for us at the moment.

We are truly sorry about this. We’ll try and keep in touch about when any of these shows might be made up or when we might be touring again.

As always, thanks for caring.

drat. that’s too bad… the page for shows on their site confirms that there are no shows scheduled at this time. The shows that were canceled were in the UK, Europe, and Taiwan.

Posted by Molli Fire on Thursday, 3May07

M.I.A. has been working on her second studio album Kala which won’t be released until August 21st. It features beat production by Diplo, Mr. Bangladesh, Timbaland, Switch, Danja Handz, and Three 6 Mafia. Not too long ago, Zane Lowe of BBC radio had exclusive airplay of the first single, “Boys”. Many are already familiar with “Bird Flu” which has seen a lot of online trading, and maybe “XR2” which has also been on M.I.A.’s mayaspace. i rounded up the songs that have been floating around the internet to give you a taste of what’s to come, including the latest, “Hit That”. Tracks are provided in part by Analog Giant and FADER mag.

Hit That” with production by Mr. Bangladesh
Boyz” from Zane Lowe’s radio show
XR2” is only available on her Mayaspace…

As for “Bird Flu”, M.I.A. describes the fella who invented the Bird Flu Dance for her :

The lineup:

Melanie Safka
Roky Erickson
Forced Entertainment
Jerry Dammers’ Spatial AKA Orchestra
John Barry & The London Philharmonic Orchestra

Armed with a sharp wit, an acid tongue and a talent for capturing the moment with razor sharp lyrics, Jarvis Cocker is one of today’s best-loved rock stars. The festival opens with sets from Motorhead and Melanie and ends with a show from Jarvis himself, taking in performances from The Jesus and Mary Chain, Iggy & The Stooges and many more along the way.

If it is Jarvis himself that you are interested in, you’ll be stoked to know that he will be taking a little tour after this festival is complete. He will also be on the South Bank Show on June 10th. He will be discussing his role in Pulp, what is was like dealing with the fame, and his experiences as an “outsider” in music. Pictures! Sonic Boom (Spacemen3, Spectrum) in SF

Posted by Molli Fire on Thursday, 19April07

So, this is actually just another tease…. I was lucky enough to see the wonderful performance by Sonic Boom in SF this month. Sonic Boom is the genius behind the aural experimentations known as E.A.R. and he is also the voice and half the music of Spectrum AND he is one of the Spacemen3. Busy Boy. Well, he is touring the US and has shows in the UK as i earlier posted about. The show at the Hemlock Tavern was fantastic! i will do my best to write a proper report about it this week. i will definitely have a series of 1-2 minute videos with sound to post up here very soon. i haven’t posted movies yet, so i might have to figure out how to do that within wordpress. Maybe it’s time to start a youtubular account….

Well, until i get the movies up, here is a little slideshow of the pix :

Global Academy Of Electronica Skills

Posted by Molli Fire on Wednesday, 11April07

every year since 2002, the Red Bull Academy has gathered an overwhelming roster of teachers and pupils together from around the globe to share skills, knowledge, experience, equipment, and philosophy.

Wyl Menmuir published this on the FLY website at the end of last week actually, but i just noticed it today. there is still plenty of time to check out this Academy idea, mull it over, and then apply, so i wanted to share it with you right away!

The Toronto Red Bull Academy 2007 kicks off this April with Info Sessions across the UK from DJs, producers and musicians.

Some of the UK’s most promising hip-hop, soul, broken beat, dubstep, D&B artists will be headed out to Toronto as part of the Academy, which offers an insight into music making today.

Music makers, producers and DJs can apply to be jetted to Toronto for two weeks in September and October to get tuition from the likes of Bob Moog, Phonte from Little Brother, the Mizell Brothers and twenty-year-old dubstep DJ, Skream. The emphasis is on creating, with a combination of live performances in the host city and lectures in studios.

The Academy is running taster days across the UK in April for anyone interested with talks from Four Tet (London), Greg Wilson (Leeds), Alex Smoke (Glasgow) and Waajeed (Platinum Pies Pipers, Detroit) in Birmingham. As all the sessions are free it’s a win win for anyone wanting to further their music making.

The UK Info Sessions are:
Wed 18 April, at Glasgow’s Sub Club with guest lecturers Alex Smoke, Beni G, (Mixologists) and Marcia Graham. Starts at 8pm.
Fri 20 April, at London’s Roundhouse with lectures from Seiji, Four Tet, DJ Zinc, studio workshops from Danny Breaks, Zinc, Tony Nwachukwu, Logic, Reason, Ableton Live and Serato. Starts midday.
Mon 23 April at Leeds Mine University Union, with lectures from Greg Wilson and Skream.
Thur 26 April at Birmingham’s The Old Library with Waajeed (Platinum Pied Pipers) and Marcus Intalex.

the Academy website also hosts numerous educational materials in the form of videos, podcasts, streams and the like. whether you apply for the full enrollment experience or not, this provides many opportunities to hone your skills as a producer, dj, MC, sound engineer, etc.

info about this year’s featured city, Toronto, application info and deadlines, and the dates of the 2 different 2-week long “semesters” can all be found at :

the locations that hosted the academy previously :
2006 Melbourne
2005 Seattle
2004 Rome
2003 Cape Town
2002 Sao Paulo

loads of questions answered in the Academy’s FAQ

events are scheduled for everyday this month, but in different cities and countries. see if there is an event near you on the CALENDAR

tonight is/was in Belgrade, on thursday, april 12th, TORONTO will have a FREE event with the Cut Chemist and Bernard Purdie!!
other highlights include Grandmaster Flash in Amsterdam, Arabian Prince (ex-NWA) in Zurich, dj Zinc and Henrik Schwarz in Berlin, Kode 9 in Valencia, and a street party called “Popular Soundclash” in Lisbon, not to mention detroit djs, idm producers, Skream, Super Collider, Reason, Live, and Serato demonstrations!

there are many more big names and amazing info sessions, workshops, and after parties in more international cities than what i have listed here. the site is coded in a flash player, so i have to hand copy each name and place, so instead, i am encouraging you, nudging you, pressuring you to go check the calendar! especially if you are in melbourne, europe, or south america. i did not see anything planned for any US cities, but there were at least 2 or 3 events in Canada. there will also an info session and equipment tour held in the Tuff Gong recording studios in Jamaica!

enjoy the events, apply for a scholarship, and pop back in here to share your experiences with me, please! :)
