Wiley – Godfather Of Grime – Makes “Mistakes”

Posted by Molli Fire on Monday, 11June07

Brrrup! Another sizzling Wiley video! Feel the beat drop in “Mistakes.” This tune is heartfelt and dare I say with conscious lyrics. Reminds me just a likkle bit of Dizzee’s “Brand New Day” from Boy In Da Corner, when he was still under Eski-boy’s wing.

Wiley - Eski-Boy - Mistakes

“Mistakes” video in high quality mov format

or watch it from youTube:

Wiley also released Tshirts today with his name sprayed in white across the chest. They would sure look hot on some fellas. Get one from the Ninja Tune Shop. And, yes, Wiley is even playing the Dour Festival in Belgium on July 13th. I still need a ticket to that if anyone has an extra! (I also need a plane ticket if anybody has a wad of bills they want to donate! Just email me.)

Also on the Big Dada horizon, they have a 10th Anniversary album coming out called Big Dada Best Bits. It’s scheduled for release in September and I will have more details on that over the summer. In the meantime, check out Big Dada’s download page. There are even some FREE mp3s on there. For you.

Dope New 50/50 Video From Wiley!

Eski Boy makes a smokin video for “50/50” from his upcoming Playtime Is Over and HearingTest has the links to a crystal clear mov format. It positively sparkles, and comes rumbling out of the subwoofers! In addition to the vid, the sweet fellas over at Big Dada have sent us a link to where you can get your own Wiley player. It’s sweet too, I wish I could show you here, but WordPress does not allow embedding of players other than a few like yT. But trust me, go check it out, it has the video for “50/50” plus audio for “Gangsters” and “Bow E3”. It’s a clever likkle device –

December ATP – Portishead, Aphex Twin, Earth, Julian Cope And More

Yep, all those folks are on the lineup. What isn’t obvious from the beginning of this report is that the second part features an album review by Julian Cope for one of the most amazing dark ambient metal bands – Sacrificial Totem. The album that Cope reviewed is Hurqalya which can be found on Katabatik. All fans of ambient noise, ambient metal, and atmospheric sonic storytelling should definitely check this out. Katabatik releases albums and hosts concerts with bands who create unique sonic experimentations. Their catalogue ranges from experimental electronica to IDM to ambient, metal, ragtime, and glitch-core. Definitely a fine resource of music.

Blue Scholars Video For “Back Home” From Bayani

The song rules, the video rules. Go check it out. It’s about bringing our troops home to their families where they belong.

Dragons Exist And So Do Ninjas

Ninja Tunes found a rare master tape from 1970 of psychedelic surf rock by the Dragons. Dennis Dragon is known for his work composing soundtracks for 1970’s skate films, surf films, ski films, and more. This is such an epic story of the Dragon Brothers and how they were just too far ahead of the music business in the 70’s. If you read nothing else, read this. Okay, maybe just this, Shadetek, and Wiley.

Whew! What a week! And this is just the highlights! ENJOY!

This week’s news is brought to you by the letter D

Beastie Boys Win Webby Award For “I F***ing Shot That”

Posted by Molli Fire on Friday, 8June07

On Tuesday the Beastie Boys were honored with Artist of the Year at the 11th Annual Webby Awards. They received this award for their innovative idea in 2006 of incorporating user-generated content into their live concert film, notoriously known as Awesome, I F***ing Shot That. The Beastie Boys movie was compiled entirely of footage created by the audience with cameras that were distributed at the concert.

The Webby Award also chose them in part for their work and loud advocation of more flexible copyright laws and a share-alike attitude with their own music. David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards, described the Beastie Boys’ audience interaction enthusiastically when he stated:

“From the Internet to video to music, Beastie Boys have created a totally unique, two-way relationship with their fans… They embody the kind of collaboration and exchange of ideas that the Web is all about.”

It’s true. Just check out their official website with its own page dedicated to making Beastie Boys vocal A Cappellas available for fans to create remixes. Their website also has a tour diary, a studio cam, and a blog where they post the kinds of things that they are getting kicks from, like the fantastic G.I. Joe PSA by Eric Fensler or clips from Sesame Street.

The Webby Awards have a strict 5-word acceptance speech rule, and this is how the Boys worked it:

Can anyone fix my computer?

Hint: go to the blog and watch the G.I. Joe PSA, for reals….

For more fab 1 liners, go to the Webby Awards speeches page. For more BBoys photos from the event, go to this Picture Page. Other Award winners included LonelyGirl15, Halcyon, Ask A Ninja, and many more!

Updates To Icky Thump Gets Leaked + Video

Posted by Molli Fire on Thursday, 7June07

UPDATE: ICKY THUMP IS NOW STREAMING. Go to the June 12th Icky Thump news on HearingTest for more info.

So, I recently reported (very briefly) that Jack White was pissed to find out that Icky Thump was leaked on a Chicago radio station. Finally, I have a bit more to add to that story.

Watch the official Icky Thump video while you read:

To recap, DJ Electra of Q101 in Chicago received a digital file of the entire album that is set to be released on June 19th. She in turn played the entire album on the air with absolutely no permission from either the White Stripes nor WMG. When Jack got wind of the news within mere hours of the album airing, he took time out of his busy tour schedule and called the station from Spain. He verbally let the people have it over the phone, but the case seems to end there. As yet, no legal action has been taken against the station nor the dj. I will keep my eye out for updates however, because Warner Music Group does not take kindly to piracy and will usually release the dogs (i.e. the RIAA) when they get offended. Someone did record the entire album off the radio and it is available somewhere on the web right now. I’d post a link but it would be useless because it will be shut down by the time you read this and another one will spring up in its place. Check back here for updates on how the story progresses. You can always type White Stripes into the searchbox in the right sidebar, and it will take you directly to all the stories about the band that are published on HearingTest. (There is also a link at the end of this post to all other WS stories).

In the meantime, here are the best/most relevant links available about this story:

Lots of Eski-boy goodies today! First of all, check the video for “50/50” off the upcoming Playtime Is Over album:

50/50 Vid

The album gets dropped worldwide on June 4th, but you can get the (320kbps) mp3s of “50/50” and “Bow E3” from BLEEP right now. You will however have to wait to attend the album release party with Boy Better Know crew (JME, Skepta), Loefah and Illa Man all supporting the Grandfather of Grime! That will be at Cargo in London on a Thursday – June 21st. Thursday has always been my favorite day of the week. Nothing but good things happen on Thursdays. Wiley will be performing live, and for only 10 Quid you can’t afford to miss it!

If you want more Wiley, you can get your fix with the Independent Music Magazine today, he’s the adorable cover boy, same with RWD Mag, The Wire, Echoes. Next week he graces the cover of Plan B and One Week To Live. Big Smoke covers him at the end of the month. Whoo boy, good thing his face is so pleasant to look at. That’s a lot of music magazine covers to be staring out from!

Eski-boy Wiley On The Cover Of Independent Music Magazine

Independent said this about the upcoming album:

“Playtime is Over is so important, not just to him, but to the future legacy of grime, and what it might mean in 10 years time.. Brilliantly grime, fuelled with anthems and sing-alongs and deserves to go down as his greatest work to date.”

Playtime Is Over is released on June 4th by Big Dada. You can listen to the single “Bow E3” on their homepage.

Futuristic ReIssue of Bob Marley’s Exodus – USB & Micro SD

Posted by Molli Fire on Friday, 1June07

Always at the forefront of revolution – the 30th anniversary of Bob Marley’s Exodus is being celebrated with the album’s release on the new music formats USB Memory Stick and Micro SD Memory Card. Marley has entered the Matrix. 4000 copies of the USB version in glorious red, green and gold include the entire album of music plus 3 video tracks recorded in June 1977 at the Rainbow Theatre in London during Marley’s exile in Britain.

Here is “Exodus” being performed live in full funky style with the whole band, the ladies, the love:

The Micro SD version would be even more limited – only 2000 copies. But that’s not all, the album will be released in ALL the old fashioned formats, except cassette tape, sorry. There will be a regular CD, a deluxe CD with a DVD of 12 live songs from the Rainbow Theatre shows, and a 12″ vinyl record packaged as an exact replica of the original issue in 1977.

Bob Marley - Exodus Gets ReIssued In New Digital Formats Plus Vinyl, CD

Tracklist

1. Natural Mystic
2. So Much Things To Say
3. Guiltiness
4. The Heathen
5. Exodus
6. Jamming
7. Waiting In Vain
8. Turn Your Lights Down Low
9. Three Little Birds
10. One Love/People Get Ready

BIG UPS ISLAND!!! That’s what I call respect.

Thanks to Uncut News for the info.

Dancehall TV – Virtual Jamaican Education

Posted by Molli Fire on Friday, 1June07

Have you ever wanted a hipsters’ education in chart-topping dancehall music like Sean Paul, Shaggy, and Macka Diamond? Well, for this week only, Vice Magazine’s online music channel has just that. Interviews, music videos, fashion do’s and dont’s, etc. You probably won’t find M.I.A. or Ninjaman, but you will definitely hear from Lutan Fiyah, Sizzla, and see lots of gorgeous Jamaican countryside. If that doesn’t sound sexy enough, you can fill your eyes with the serpentine dance moves of the dancehall queens.

Just head over to VBS.com for your selection. You can find more like this from their video affiliate (or maybe parent company?) Brightcove… Brightcove also produces cable tele straight from Kingston Jamaica, such as RETV which has even more dancehall tv for your viewing pleasure.
Enjoy!

Sizzla + Sly & Robbie, New Single/Video

Posted by Molli Fire on Thursday, 17May07

Sizzla Kalonji spent last Friday filming the video for his single, “Show More Love To The Youths” with its director, Allan “Endless” Tennent. The video’s theme promotes finding an end to violence and crime, taking care of the world’s youth, and supporting community. The song features Sizzla singing over Sly and Robbie’s Africa riddim, and is getting ample radio play in Jamaica.

This song is one of 16 that will be included on the Feed The Children Africa compilation that is due out on Energy Beat Records by the end of May. The album also includes Anthony B, Spanner Banner, Turbulance, Paul Elliot, Morgan Heritage, Richie Spice, Norris Man, Gyptian, and Juice.

There isn’t much more info available currently, but you might glean something from Yard Flex.

In honour of Mother’s Day, here is the video for Thank U Mama by Sizzla:

If you would like to know more about Sizzla, there is a good documentary – the visual is not good, but the audio is excellent:

Evidence From Trail Of Destruction/TS002

Posted by Molli Fire on Sunday, 13May07

Well, it sure took awhile for me to finish editing and uploading the fotos and videos from the last 5lowershop shindig, but alas, here they are!

Doormouse, End.User, Kontroversy 396, Arson, Bonk, HRock, 666 Gangstaz, the_Stapler_, Planetsize, Rtype, Fishstix, Heartworm CELEBRATE THE RECORD RELEASE OF TEEN SUICIDE 002

this was the flyer for the event:

end-door-user-mouse-flyer.jpg

I apologize that so much of the foto and video footage is so dark…it is after all an underground warehouse with minimal lighting except for cool trippy stuff that doesn’t translate well to film.

here are the fotos:

Sorry!  Fotos will be back tomorrow.

AND here are the videos:

this one is my favorite: it’s 5am at this point, listen to the crowd still cheering & yelling!

Thanks to everyone who came out an supported this event! Thanks to all the performers – every single one ROCKED the house! This party was off the hook fun until at least 7am! thanks to Doormouse and End.User for traveling to SF to show us a good time! Thanks to local heroes Kontroversy 396, Arson, Bonk, Heartworm, and Fishstix! AND A HUGE BIG UPS AND CONGRATULATIONS TO RTYPE – for getting Teen Suicide 002 pressed to gorgeous vinyl, mastered by the one and only Tim Xavier! Also BIG UPS & THANKS to the Teen Suicide 002 superstars – HROCK, 666 GANGSTAZ, THE_STAPLER_, & PLANETSIZE r.i.p………

To everyone else- you missed out, your only redemption is to be at the next 5lowershop bru-ha.

Here is the info on the record release, Teen Suicide 002 :

previews of the tracks are available at http://www.myspace.com/teensuicide

Teen Suicide 02 – Welcome to Bayshore EP
Four tracks showcasing the best breakcore, hardcore and jungle artists
associated with San Francisco’s 5lowershop soundsystem.

666Gangstaz – Tricknology
A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, a hop, skip, and a jump away from Detroit,
Todd Cook (aka 666Gangstaz aka DJ Crackhouse aka the Slime Lord) grew up
equally influenced by Jeff Mills as Soundmurderer and SK-1. His track
“Tricknology” combines the frenetic chaos and vst trickery of breakcore and
IDM with the bass and tempo of dubstep and techno. Don’t worry, a DJ
friendly intro/outro will make it a snap to mix in.

H-Rock – This One is for Ramo (Julian’s Reprise)
Victor Evans is fast becoming a rising star in hardcore techno. His track on
the first Teen Suicide melted clubs from Rotterdam to San Francisco. This
track is even better. A dedication to the movie Beat Street and graffiti
writers worldwide, this track caused teenaged girls to hug and kiss each
other with excitement in Portland. I swear, I was there. H-Rock produces
speedcore and noise as Vankmen. The “H-Rock vs Vankmen EP” is scheduled to
be released as Teen Suicide 04, as well as a debut release on Fathme
Records, good friends of ours. Look out!

The Stapler – Coldf33t
The Staper (aka DJ FVK aka SoFat! Soundsystem aka DJ Heathrow) was first
exposed to ragga jungle and hardcore through squat parties in London’s
notorious Hackney Wick. After moving back to New York City,
the Stapler started SoFat! Soundsystem, playing the finest in dub, ragga
jungle and breakcore. Now a resident of San Francisco, the Stapler has been
producing original and distinctive ragga jungle. You don’t need a duthmaster
to enjoy this, you’ll be hooked with the first bass note.

Planetsize – Binary Brotha
This record is dedicated to the memory Planetsize. A close friend to
everyone involved with Teen Suicide Records and 5lowershop soundsystem, he
passed away shortly before this record came out. “Binary Brotha” is
definitely the most insane track on the record. Breakcore without limits and
designed to rock a soundsystem, the track is also a reminder of what we
lost.

Sonic Boom SF Show Review

Posted by Molli Fire on Thursday, 26April07

I did it! I finally headed over to youtube and created a channel for HearingTest! Now i will be able to post videos here immediately!

On that note, let’s get to the Sonic Boom show review!

The digs – Hemlock Tavern, San Francisco, April 8th, 2007.

An absolutely lovely night in SF, already starting to hint at the warmth of summer, with the soothing moisture in the air that is ever-present from the nearby beaches. My mates and i filled our bellies at the late-night diner just up the hill from Hemlock Tavern, because you can’t get fries and root beer floats at the bars here.

There were 2 bands that played before Sonic Boom :
Stevenson Ranch Davidians

LSD and the Search for God

Even when I was at the show I couldn’t figure out which was which, so we’ll skip that part. They were both fun to listen to live, and both were at the mercy of the person doing sound who seemed to have no idea how one was supposed to run sound. When one singer asked through the mic for the monitors to be turned up, they got no response, and no action. So, they had to wonder if it sounded right. In front of the stage, where the audience was, it sounded great. To the side of the stage and on stage, it sounded weird. Luckily, the crowd thought it sounded great. Note to sound tech people – take your earplugs out once in awhile to gauge how it sounds, especially when changing the volume on different things! This person did not, and consequently kept turning up the volume on a microphone that was picking up the cymbals. To the audience, it was way too loud and shrill, yet they kept turning it up….

OK! On to the good stuff! Mr. Sonic Boom played an absolutely wonderful set! He had crazy old digital electronic instruments, like a Yamaha synthesizer, a Dr. BOSS Sampler (which he never used the sequencer of, he triggered each sample by hand as he needed it!), an Electribe (i think it was the sampler version, I don’t think he used the sequencer on this one either!) and some strange little box marked Casio that made drum rhythms akin to old organ percussion beats! You know, samba, foxtrot, rock…. For some reason, i expect this type of gear to make crazy techno or noise or dub or similar. SB made gorgeous ethereal music that was delicate even as it expanded to fill the room. The one man show consisted of songs that he has played in the bands he has been part of previously, mostly Spectrum music. You can hear little bits of the songs in the videos.

As much as I love Hemlock Tavern, and will keep going there because they host many of my favorite musicians, they really need to work on their ventilation. Every show I have ever seen there, I ended up out in the alley trying to cool off and get fresh air. Even with the big door open in the back of the room, it is impossible to stay in the throng of people pressing as close to the stage as possible because it just gets too sweaty hot. And it’s only April now. In July, it is much worse. Some people theorize that this is part of the rock and roll experience, but that’s dumb. I have never enjoyed a show less just because it was comfortable. Just read my review of ISIS at Bimbo’s 365 Club for proof. But don’t get me wrong, Hemlock is still one of the best venues to see music – the stage is only a little bit elevated from the floor, so you can get in real close (which is how i can read itty bitty type on plastic boxes of obscure electronic devices), the sound is usually good, the drinks are proper, and the staff is so dang nice.

Here are the videos, with the slideshow from last week repeated at the end of this post :

Sonic Boom is also the purveyor of a fantastic website, so make sure you check it out : http://www.sonic-boom.info/

Southern Lord Recording artists: EARTH will be performing at a special FREE in-store performance!

where: Easy Street Records Seattle (Queen Anne Store)
when: April 21st // 7PM
why: In comemmoration of their new album release: “Hibernaculum

Go check it out and dont forget to pick up the new CD/DVD/LP!

this is quite a treat! i usually have to pay $20 to see these pioneers of the Drone sound. if you are in the Seattle area, don’t miss this opportunity. even if you are not sure that you like this style of music, the only way to tell is to hear it LIVE and LOUD!

this latest creation, Hibernaculum, has a real traditional country twang. it’s a very unique sound, cultivated in a real roots manner. not what most people think of when someone labels it metal.
