Big Brother Is Trying To Outlaw Fun, Dancing Is Revolutionary

While the RIAA and CRB are working diligently to eliminate public access to music and radio online, politicians and police are dredging up ways to prevent people from making music and dancing.

I’m about to show you the different ways that NYC groups are working to open the possibilities for live music and dance events in a city that is clamping down on music venues. Here you will find fun parties to go to, a review of the Mayday celebration, and the historical significance of how our access to social gatherings is being eroded.

The current prohibition atmosphere of certain major cities from SF to NYC, the actions of the RIAA and CRB towards university students and webcasters during the last few years, and the FCC’s increased licensing “laws” and gestapo raids on micro-powered radio broadcasters a few years before that, mirror the conflicted relationship between legislative bodies and community supported channels of entertainment in nearly every medium, in every modern nation. Today, the headlines are focused on the censorship of live music and the act of dancing to live music, but the struggle remains the same as the days of prohibition. Here is what made headlines today….

NYC Cabaret Laws Are Destroying The Music Scene

New York City has been severely deprived of live entertainment because of tight restrictions that make it difficult to obtain and maintain cabaret licenses. Similar in spirit to crackhouse laws in the Southern states and the Criminal Justice Act created by the UK Parliament in 1994 to prevent large music festivals and the public performance of music with a repeating sequence of beats.
Big Brother is trying to outlaw fun. And what’s worse, is that it’s being done with laws that are incredibly prejudiced – these laws were written and passed to prevent interracial socializing (cabaret laws), to profile music enthusiasts as drug users (crackhouse laws), and to limit the free assembly of low-income people (any law that forces you to get a permit to use public land). Basically, these laws are designed to keep the people complacent through homogenized outlets of safe entertainment, and restrict the channels that provide an opportunity for revolt. Even though most of these channels are not trying to revolt against anything, they are trying to provide opportunities to relax and have a good time. Different people prefer different forms of relaxation, but all should have equal access to methods that are widely enjoyed, no? Not all will feel relaxed at the opera, or a Gwen Stefani concert, but I think all people should be encouraged to enjoy the performance of music and dancing.

Greg Miller, the president and spokesperson of Dance Parade, told metro :

“Three years ago, there were 300 cabaret licenses,” Miller said. “Every three months the number drops by 15. It’s so hard not only to get a new cabaret license, but to get one renewed because of building codes.”
“there are 148 cabaret licenses and that includes adult entertainment, hotels and restaurants”

What happens when a vibrant city like NYC has trouble finding legal venues to socialize in? Music venues are dropping like flies in the Big Apple – just 2 weeks ago, the closing of the Tonic and subsequent arrests made headlines, while many readers may not have noticed the FOR SALE sign on the building that houses the Knitting Factory. The Knitting Factory is not in immediate danger of closing. Despite a sale of the building, the venue will continue to operate through their 2009 lease. After this date however: “there has been no decision as to the future of the venue.” In NYC, 5 venues a month lose their cabaret licenseWhat is there to do then, in the nightlife capital of the world?

Dancing In The Streets Of New York

What happens when there is no legal venue to party in? The party people take to the streets! The next opportunity to meet up with New York City’s finest revelers for a day of Dancing In The Streets will arrive on May 19th. That’s the day for the first annual Dance Parade with thousands of dancers – including YOU – and top djs Kool Herc, Danny Tenaglia, John Jellybean Benitez. There will also be performances from many dance groups representing different styles, from breakdancing to ballet, with whirling and wild styles. The Dance Parade is organized to raise awareness about the cabaret law as well as NYC’s dance history.

Dance Parade’s president Greg Miller is not new to events in public space. This past Saturday found him at the 9th Annual Blackkat Mayday party, which itself faced permit issues for the first time ever. Instead of the community gathering being held in Tompkins Square Park, the event site for the last 8 years, the organizers had to choose another location when unable to obtain permits required in a timely manner. Jason BK told the metro that the Blackkat artist collective had applied for the permits in January, and had not received permission by May 1st!

9th Annual NYC Blackkat Mayday Party

In the tradition of International Workers’ Day, the crew of artists and musicians known as Blackkat hosted their 9th annual Mayday Party in NYC this past Sunday. Blackkat has organized free and low-cost community events in NYC for over a decade, such as Party 4 Freedom and Justice in 2002, and the Biotour Benefit in 2005. The Indypendent newspaper reported from the 2007 Mayday party, quoting Jason BK, Amok, and Chrome, who supply and maintain the sound for these events- from the speakers to the noise :

“We live in a city where money and getting your name out there is more important than actual content that’s provided,” said Amok, a musician and two year Blackkat collective member. “This is what makes Blackkat so very different, it puts content first always … which is something that other crews unfortunately forget to do.”

In the past, Blackkat has joined forces with other groups including Dance Parade New York, the Madagascar Institute, The Danger, DanceSafe, Renegade Virus and Havoc Sound. Events have included a fundraiser for the 2005 Biotour benefit, numerous festivals and parties in various warehouses such as 3rd Ward and the now closed Lunatarium and 38Nine (in Queens).

“The main point is that it is vital that people come together in a creative community and we hope that these events can be part of that community,” said Chrome. BK added, “They have to be fun to be effective.”

Guest speakers this year included Norman Siegel, a civil rights attorney, and Missy Galore of the NYC Dance Parade. Information tables were hosted by DanceSafe, IndyMedia, Metro In Motion TriState Biodiesel and more. The sound stage was provided by MadAro, Anthony, and Disorient with maestro Daniel.

Blackkat And Friends

Check out the official Blackkat website, where you can see more pix from the event, download super tight dj mixes by the Blackkat noise bringers, and choose your own adventure from there, it’s a mad mad jungle what this fella get up to when he gets together with some friends! It reminds me of a quote about Spiral Tribe, another music and art based soundsystem unorganization who were participated in events around the UK countryside from dusk til dawn til dusk and dawn again for days. The quote is from Spaces of Democracy :

“Spiral Tribe, with their free and inclusive parties, succeeded in constituting an alternative public space, rather than just a secret one. Though no one could say how many lives were touched in their three year tour of duty”.

Props to the Blackkat population for bringing it for more than 10 years! The roots run deep, the branches have touched many, many people.

Blackkat, HavocSound, soFat! Sound, and Renegade Virus joined forces during 2001-2004, hauling speakers, generators, records or synths throughout NYC plus occasional road trips to other parts of the US and Canada. These soundsystem collaborations earned much respect and no money for providing nonstop music at the Annual Blackkat Mayday Party, Swamptek, Autonomous Mutant Festival, Monsters of Love 1-4, renegade outdoor free parties across the NYC/SF/US, and underground warehouse events in NYC and SF, all while supporting and spreading the DIY free party culture and direct action for sustainable technology. Since 2004, Blackkat and Jungle Terror Krew have continued the mischief with Renegade Virus and TBI25 in NYC … while 5lowershop, HavocSound, and soFat! have been raging in SF with S.P.A.Z. and Army of Love – constructing walls of sound and yards of power cable at AMF, Monsters of Love, Unchained Reaction, Fuck Parade, renegade outdoor, indoor, mobile, and underground free parties all over SF/NYC/USA. These non-profit crews have sustained where many other well-funded businesses have come and gone as a result of their experiments in alternative technologies. The consistent message of building a more concious culture is further demonstrated by the work these people have done in the science of sustainable living on this planet and grassroots outreach and education in the community. All the crews mentioned have been in involved with converting all their tour buses and generators to run on straight vegetable oil, teaching workshops in biofuel systems and sustainability skills, mobile microbroadcasting, and a weekly internet broadcast with FM radio rebroadcast in England and Europe.

Spiral Tribe vs. the Public Order

Free parties became a big issue in the UK and Europe during the early 90’s when large gatherings of people would assemble with concert speakers and have a free dance party. To outlaw this type of noncommercial music festival (there were no camping fees, or tickets sold, you just had to be able to get there, and feed yourself for the duration), the Parliament of the UK created the Criminal Justice Act in 1994. Ironically, the main focus of this Act was to restrict and prohibit “anti-social” behaviors, including organizing and attending huge gatherings centered around a common interest in popular music. It even included a section based on the type of music considered anti-social – repetitive beats – and used a precise definition of how many bars of music had to pass without a beat looping and/or repeating! Spiral Tribe challenged the Act and held massive outdoor events with live performances of hypnotically repetitive beats. The UK punk band, Crass, contributed their social commentary with a furious double kick drum beat that repeated until you thought your heart might collapse. The wall of speakers that Spiral Tribe carried to these events was the length and height of 3-4 city bus coaches long and tall. When Crass played, the drums would be a barrage of punches shooting out of that wall. 13 members of Spiral Tribe were arrested immediately following the Castlemorton Common Festival in May 1992 for public order offenses. The techno-punk crew seemed to be having a blast doing as much damage to the legal system as possible. The courtroom became a circus. The defendants, and their supporters in the benches, wore Tshirts to their court appearances with the message “Breach The Peace” written in large letters. The message was seen in every photograph and television news coverage of the case. Especially handy if you released a record with the same name, which Spiral Tribe had. They released albums of fantastic techno, with deejays chatting over some tracks. Forward The Revolution blends the steady beat of Native American drumming with the excited heart beat of their drummachines and the Native Am. singing with Simone’s flawless humanoid rapping about the future of the free party system. She defiantly repeats, “You might stop the party, But you can’t stop the future.” At the end of the 4 month long case, it was calculated that this was the longest running and most expensive case in British legal history. Just to stop the music.

Sonic Boom SF Show Review

I did it! I finally headed over to youtube and created a channel for HearingTest! Now i will be able to post videos here immediately!

On that note, let’s get to the Sonic Boom show review!

The digs – Hemlock Tavern, San Francisco, April 8th, 2007.

An absolutely lovely night in SF, already starting to hint at the warmth of summer, with the soothing moisture in the air that is ever-present from the nearby beaches. My mates and i filled our bellies at the late-night diner just up the hill from Hemlock Tavern, because you can’t get fries and root beer floats at the bars here.

Even when I was at the show I couldn’t figure out which was which, so we’ll skip that part. They were both fun to listen to live, and both were at the mercy of the person doing sound who seemed to have no idea how one was supposed to run sound. When one singer asked through the mic for the monitors to be turned up, they got no response, and no action. So, they had to wonder if it sounded right. In front of the stage, where the audience was, it sounded great. To the side of the stage and on stage, it sounded weird. Luckily, the crowd thought it sounded great. Note to sound tech people – take your earplugs out once in awhile to gauge how it sounds, especially when changing the volume on different things! This person did not, and consequently kept turning up the volume on a microphone that was picking up the cymbals. To the audience, it was way too loud and shrill, yet they kept turning it up….

OK! On to the good stuff! Mr. Sonic Boom played an absolutely wonderful set! He had crazy old digital electronic instruments, like a Yamaha synthesizer, a Dr. BOSS Sampler (which he never used the sequencer of, he triggered each sample by hand as he needed it!), an Electribe (i think it was the sampler version, I don’t think he used the sequencer on this one either!) and some strange little box marked Casio that made drum rhythms akin to old organ percussion beats! You know, samba, foxtrot, rock…. For some reason, i expect this type of gear to make crazy techno or noise or dub or similar. SB made gorgeous ethereal music that was delicate even as it expanded to fill the room. The one man show consisted of songs that he has played in the bands he has been part of previously, mostly Spectrum music. You can hear little bits of the songs in the videos.

As much as I love Hemlock Tavern, and will keep going there because they host many of my favorite musicians, they really need to work on their ventilation. Every show I have ever seen there, I ended up out in the alley trying to cool off and get fresh air. Even with the big door open in the back of the room, it is impossible to stay in the throng of people pressing as close to the stage as possible because it just gets too sweaty hot. And it’s only April now. In July, it is much worse. Some people theorize that this is part of the rock and roll experience, but that’s dumb. I have never enjoyed a show less just because it was comfortable. Just read my review of ISIS at Bimbo’s 365 Club for proof. But don’t get me wrong, Hemlock is still one of the best venues to see music – the stage is only a little bit elevated from the floor, so you can get in real close (which is how i can read itty bitty type on plastic boxes of obscure electronic devices), the sound is usually good, the drinks are proper, and the staff is so dang nice.

ISIS, JESU, ZOZOBRA Bring Harmonic Tremors To SF!

San Francisco

San Francisco is rocked by earthquakes regularly – tremors that rattle the china, or knock a picture off the wall are often shrugged off and forgotten 20 minutes later. This might explain why residents were indifferent to a bump in seismic activity last Friday when ISIS, Jesu, and Zozobra installed a wall of guitar amps that made the ground tremble. Neighbors can blame these 3 bands for the Seismic Sludge Metal rumbling from amps turned up to 5.5 (Richter). Their booking agent was wise to secure Bimbo’s 365 Club for the epic event – one of the few venues large enough, comfortable enough, and loud enough to showcase three heavyweight bands. With Jesu and ISIS, their music history alone would crush the floorboards of a lesser club. Add Zozobra to the stage, and the show would have moved to the basement. Bimbo’s delivered a solid, high quality show in style.

Zozobra

I am super impressed by Zozobra. They could easily be headlining their own tour, but they were an ideal choice for initiating this occasion. They displayed a horde of talent and powerful command of superbly written songs. the night started with frontman and founder Caleb Scofield, appearing solo. He greeted the room with a lovely melody that he plucked from the strings of a red guitar. When he sang, it was dark, yet gentle, almost a serenade. A few moments into this ballad, the rest of the band came out and he switched the guitar for a bass. The other two guitarists flanked Scofield on stage. Both are lean, with just enough hair to cover their faces. The entire time they played, they were grinning and rocking their heads wildly. They looked very similar, almost like twins, which provided me with a stereoscopic view of iconic guitar thrashing. The three men commanded the front of the stage, headbanging powerfully and enthusiastically, occasionally synchronized by a unified strum across 17 tense strings. I felt hypnotized by the timeless guitar stances “the twins” mirrored as they sustained a restless sonic assault. Zozobra created layer after layer of harmonic tremors that rippled through the wooden dance floor, which caused the crowd to sway like skyscrapers on heaving foundations. The guitarist on Scofield’s left deftly worked a nice range of pedal effects – psychedelic tremeloes hung in the air long after the string had been silenced, a repeat/reverse combo twisted melodies into meandering snakes that doubled back over their own tracks. The guitars seamlessly complimented the rolling explosions and fierce pummelings of the drums. The ricochet of drumming resembled an avalanche with perfect rhythm, almost belying the human element at its source. Zozobra rocked so hard as an opening band, that i thought maybe they had just stolen the show!

Zozobra tuned their guitars between songs, then shredded hard enough to wrench the strings into new keys again. In fact, all three bands refined the listening experience by adjusting the tuning of their guitars many times during each set. Most did this without delay, taking turns with tuning or playing something simple as interlude music. Unfortunately, this did not hold true for the wait in between bands. It seemed to take way longer than necessary for Jesu and ISIS to appear on stage. Don’t get me wrong, i do understand the dynamics of breaking down and setting up, especially for the soundguy who has to reset all the levels on the mixer for every microphone pointed at every drum, amp, and singer. It still took a long time beyond that. (And why does every venue since the dawn of time play the most unrelated, inappropriate intermission music over the house speakers?)

Jesu

Jesu was next, led by Justin Broadrick (formerly of Napalm Death and Godflesh). Broadrick had worked out a great set for this tour : he used his laptop to integrate an occasional piano melody, or extra guitar effects, or – for one song – rapid fire kick drum action (a la Mayhem). Not at the expense of the live drummer, however, who was wicked!! He accented the machine gun rhythm with impeccably timed staccato hits on the cymbals and snare. From what i have previously read, he is Danny Walker of Intronaut, filling in for Jesu’s regular drummer, Ted Parsons. Walker plays drums in exactly my favorite style – the cymbals are used to accent and release the energy raised, rather than a constant trigger of sustained sound. I am pretty sure that he had the spring on the snare drum loose so that it did not create the typical noise, but was more like the tight marching drum once used in battle. This, sometimes combined with a rapid fire beat on the low tom at the beginning of each measure, created a feeling of heading into a tribal war. On top of everything, the guy had mad skills and his timing was flawless during the entire set. This more than compensated for the brief technical difficulties experienced by other sections of the band. Dave Cochrane, the stoic bass player, has done many collaborations with Broadrick and is covering for Jesu’s Diarmuid Dalton during this tour. Unfortunately, he encountered a series of problems with the bass amp when it began cutting out of the soundsystem. He fell off a song or two, but the interaction actually seemed to loosen him up a bit. He played more confidently and seemed to have more fun once everything was working properly. All three musicians displayed class and a good rapport, as well as technical skill. Despite this, however, i couldn’t help feel like Jesu was really just Broadrick, and the others were simply jamming along with him. Which was pretty much the case, but i didn’t want to actually feel it.

Bimbo’s 365 Club

Bimbo’s 365 Club is huge inside – much bigger than Slim’s, Cafe Du Nord, or Bottom of the Hill – and on this night, it was packed with metal fans. Aahhh, but the nice thing about Bimbo’s is that it maintains a comfortable environment, even when a show, like this one, is sold out. According to the club’s website, “packed” is somewhere between 6-700 people! Many decades ago, someone planned its building and interior with the definition of “ample” as their blueprint. The stage had room enough for 3 bands’ drum kits, stacks of guitar amps/cabs, 3 synthesizers on stands, and still ample room to rock. The main room is vast, with tall ceilings and plenty of ventilation. It looked like everyone in the audience had a good view of the stage, and interaction with the bands felt close and intimate. The decor is luxe and elegant, in the style of a 1940’s dinner club, and the waitresses are a bit punk rock with their black fishnets and crowd maneuvering skills. Bimbo’s 365 Club is one of the most enjoyable places in SF to see a show, especially a loud metal show. The 6-700 people in attendance comprised a good mix of metal fans – i noticed veterans as well as new faces in the crowd. Some crews that i haven’t seen at a show in SF since the 3 Days of Darkness hosted Khanate, Thrones, and Graves At Sea, in 2004. Some of the younger faces in the crowd were likely due to Bimbo’s admittance of 18-21 year olds.

ISIS

Finally, after another long wait between bands, ISIS appeared. They immediately annihilated the intermission atmosphere, proving absolutely that it had been worth the 30 minute wait and the lifetime of anticipation spent by those who came to be initiated into live, loud sludge metal, exacted by masters of the craft. ISIS thrashed even harder than i have come to expect from sludge metal bands enjoying their 10th year of performing together. The 4 guitarists rejected the hypnotizing effect of synchronized movements that Zozobra had wielded, in favor of thrashing individually, each to a different aspect of the music. Sometimes bending completely over the guitar they gripped, then snapping backwards to stare at the ceiling, never relenting on the strings they were punishing. This added a striking visual dissonance that superbly matched the music’s innate discord. Sounds forged in minor keys and draped in distortion only to be fragmented by the battling pulses of the drums, the cymbals, and the synths that delayed and decayed at doomed intervals. This frenzy made it impossible to capture a clear photo of the whole band at once. You can see in my photos that some moved so quickly as to leave a trail of places they had been! B.C. Meyer (i believe) switched between atmospheric synthesizers and grinding guitar, headbanging and thrashing equally on both instruments. ISIS played a fair amount older material, from Celestial, Red Sea, and Mosquito Control, which made me VERY happy. I stopped listening to ISIS when they released Panopticon in 2004 because i prefer their earlier sound – uncompromisingly heavy atmospheric sludge metal. To my ears, Panopticon sounded too smoothed out, polished; in other words, too commercial, and devoid of the grit i felt was at the soul of earlier work. However, on stage in 2007, the occasional “weak” song merely provided enough contrast for the band to show off just how heavy their usual sound is. And heavy is something that ISIS owned at this show. They hit some songs so hard that it weighed down your own head, until you were facing your own soul, and then lifted it high with distorted upsweeps, until you gazed above the room, to where the melodies were scattering into the depths of space. At times, the pummeling beats could elevate your strong arm into the air, and cinch your hand into devil’s horns. An enthusiastic display of solidarity grew within the crowd, gaining strength with each attack on silence. I actually heard some fans singing along. Well, not really singing, more like growling. It was the first time i noticed anyone growling along to songs at a metal show. Whenever ISIS would delve into the quieter, more melodic parts, the crowd would cheer, or scream the band’s name, as if some just couldn’t handle the sudden release from crushing bar chords.

My Afterparty

The show inspired me greatly – this was the kind of show that justifies going out, and raises the excitement about what the future holds for music. The minute that i got home, i ripped the plastic off my new Celestial double vinyl to see what colours i got (the album has been repressed at least twice recently, each batch offering a different blend of marbled inks). Next, i lifted my shining black guitar from its furry grey coffin and played everything i had heard that night. That is my definition of a great show.

i thoroughly enjoyed the ISIS/Jesu/Zozobra concert in sf this past friday. i have some decent photos and a review that i am almost finished editing. i will be posting all of it here within the next 24 hours.

i wish i could have it up already, but i’ve been swamped with projects lately. all of these posts lately have been work related for me, hence the mainstream acts getting so much attention. i will soon have more time to publish “under the radar” metal music. so stay tuned, i’m just kindling this blog fire at the moment.

ALERT!! ALERT!!
The following cities will need earthquake retrofitting for their stadiums and amphitheatres ASAP!

Starting July 12th 2007, 24 US cities will experience pounding seismic activity when OZZFEST comes to town.

I should have known, that when Ozzy stands up and says, Let’s Have A Free Party! that only the best, blackest, most hardcore of grinding metal bands would respond. Already 8 bands have pushed their way to the front and signed their names (in blood) to the tour production’s roster. They better make the stages out of adamantium, coz these bands are HEAVYWEIGHTS!!!

SONAR – Electronic Music Festival Lineup

SONAR, the avant-garde electronic music conference/concert/museum exhibition that takes place every year in Barcelona, has announced its lineup of djs and live bands. The 3 day event takes place June 14th-17th and includes individual showcases by representatives from many different aspects of the music industry.

Think daytime schmoozing with everyone from radio, labels, and bands, to designers, artists, and press. And it’s in Spain, where daytime means after the peak of the day. Imagine warm nights of sizzling concerts by Legends of pop/electronic/rock/funk. For an entire weekend!

This lineup is tugging at my passport. It’s tugging hard! Here is a tiny taste, but you’ll have to go to the Sonar website for the full list.

Grime Explosion From UK To You

What happened last weekend in Bow, or in the rest of UK for that matter? News from that neighborhood is exploding on Pitchfork this week with new releases from Dizzee Rascal, Wiley, Roll Deep, and Joker! i can’t even type fast enough to properly share all the details with you, but i will give it a go, because this sound is hot!

For starters, i have already posted news about Dizzee Rascal’s collaborations with the Arctic Monkeys, Joss Stone, and Lily Allen. Dizzee’s new album is set to drop the same day as Wiley’s latest, and maybe last, solo album. Wiley is the frontman for the self-produced crew of djs, producers, and mc’s known as Roll Deep, of which Dizzee used to ride with. Roll Deep announced yesterday that they will be releasing their Rules & Regulations Vol. 1 on their own label, Roll Deep Recordings. That story is here.

Today Pitchfork published their monthly feature, The Month In: Grime/Dubstep which, this month, exposes grime’s wide reaching influence from UK to NYC to SF. Here are some of the highlights :

Joker, with an album already out on the label, Earwax, and another one on the way on Terrorhythm soon, is bringing a unique video game sound to a genre that has been based largely on smooth rolling drum and synth sounds. He’s been surrounded by some of UK’s hottest and most talented beat producers and mcs, so expect this kid to rise quickly to the spotlight. Also, being so heavily influenced by the grime, dubstep and garage music that has been gaining popularity over the last 5 years, he’s steppin out with a unique interpretation of what other producers have done, sometimes to the point of scrapping the elements thought to be key to the sound. And it still works. He ends up with a new sound that is still very much grime music.

The feature also has lots of good background on the developments in the UK grime scene that has brought some artists into the spotlight, while hiding others away, sometimes by drama and changing allegiances within the music scene, some tangled with the law and lost a lot of time in the studio and served time instead.
But wait, it gets even better! I don’t fully understand why the article suddenly veers over to the US to discuss the budding grime, dubstep, ragga, and dancehall scene, but it mentions 2 crews organizing parties based on this slow, bass heavy sound, one in San Francisco and one in NYC. Reppin the SF side of things, Kid Kameleon not only perfectly sums up the diversity in the music styles, the djs and producers backgrounds, but also with the crowds attending events such as the ones organized by Surya Dub at Club 6 in downtown SF. When you get that far into the article, watch your toes because Kid Kameleon starts droppin names like a B52! Kid Kameleon and Dj Ripley have both participated in the underground soundsystem culture that has been strong in NYC and SF for the last 10 years, as well as making names for themselves around the world, touring with DrumCorps/Aaron Spectre, DJ C of the MashIt ragga jungle/breakcore record label, and Kid 606 of the ragga jungle/breakcore/techno/electronica record labels Tigerbeat6 and Shockout.

And i can’t forget to mention BBC radio, who has been open to these ghetto sounds for quite some time now, and has been very influential in streaming it to an international audience. BBC radio has stations dedicated to playing the current sounds of whats happening in UK studios and on its streets, and is playing a big role in the global interest. there are other stations like RinseFM that are more in touch with the producers, mcs, and djs that have hosted night after night after night of live performances and then immediately posting whole sets online for people everywhere to enjoy for free. But, ever since Barefiles.com disappeared, and some drama has ensued, it has become difficult for anyone outside of the UK to have access to what is current in the scene. So, BBC is the place to watch and listen, even if it’s more due to their staying power than actual credibility.

However, this week they had some very influential and credible artists in the studio, hosting shows, playing music, talking about what’s happening right now, and these shows are not to be missed. BBC archives each show for one week only, so don’t sleep on this!!

BBC 1xtra had Skepta and his mum on the DJ Target show on sunday for UK’s Mother’s Day. We even got to hear him perform his new song, “Sweet Mother”, live on air! That show is here.

How To Live DRM Free In The Digital Age

Living DRM Free In The Digital Age

Is it possible? It depends on what you do as an individual, and what the manufacturers do with the technology that they make available to the public. You, as an individual, have a say in both cases. The first step needs to be taken immediately, while the second step will improve your stride into the future! Here is a new, more organized installment of “a very detailed report” about what is happening this week with digital media – storage, streaming and sharing as well as some resources for DRM free music experiences. (Feel free to read my previous installment, which is long in the tooth, but pretty widely peppered with links for lots more information about the CRB’s drastic increase in royalty rates for webcasters. You can find it in the archive on March 7th.)

First, if you are not familiar with DRM and its issues, start by reading the Wiki entry for DRM which is thorough in its portrayal of the different opinions and motivations that have polarized the music community.
Next, read Steve Jobs’ “Thoughts On Music” on apple.com which has been a hot topic since its publication February 6th 2007. Jobs basically dumbs down the history of Apple’s involvement with the music distribution companies, explains how hackers are smart enough to crack any protection they implement, forcing Apple programmers to keep up an endless game of “cat and mouse” with hackers in order to keep the big music companies docile enough to not yank its entire catalog from the iTunes Store.

[- – SPOILER WARNING – – Jobs outlines 3 options for dealing with DRM, choose one : “The third alternative is to abolish DRMs entirely. … This is clearly the best alternative for consumers, and Apple would embrace it in a heartbeat. …” But then he ends the lesson by leaving this option in the hands of the Big 4 and the EU. It’s too bad he did not make a more clear statement of intent for making changes to Apple’s software and hardware, nor the imposed DRM on tunes and movies that are not under the authority of the Big Boys….]

In the interest of counterpoint, i’d like to know how Apple and Steve Jobs would benefit or be compromised by opening up the DRM restraints. Would it ease legal difficulties arising in courts in EU countries? Would it eliminate obstacles to launching the iPhone with full online and streaming capabilities? Are we to believe that Steve Jobs is a man of the people, and making this statement as a champion of the consumers?

This time last year, CNN reported in their Money section :

The companies – Universal, Warner Music (Research), EMI and Sony BMG – were forced to accept Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ pricing because the iTunes music store has so much influence over the U.S. download market, the report said. The iTunes music store accounts for 80 percent of paid downloads.

The newspaper says that some labels were considering signing short-term contracts with Apple now and then bringing up the issue again in the near future.

Wow, that’s a lot of influence our man Steve Jobs has. If he has this kind of sway over the market and the big music companies, then it seems he would be able to make option 3 in his statement a reality : a DRM free industry, where all media players can play the music that we purchase in all of our listening environments. No more cds bought from best buy that can’t be ripped to play in the car. No more tunes purchased from online stores that cannot be played in mp3 players not made by Apple. Freedom from restrictive micro-management.

How do we the people, who gave Steve Jobs that kind of clout by purchasing 80% of all our downloads from the iTunes Store with millions of our hard earned dollars, let him know that we want DRM free music.? How do we push him into championing the cause of the consumer and putting his ideas into concrete action? It’s simple, and realistic, and it involves those 2 steps i mentioned at the beginning of this episode. First, we tell Steve Jobs that we like his ideas and we want them to become reality. Second, we use our dollars as voting power, and only purchase music that is distributed without DRM. Believe it or not, both steps are very easy, and most likely will not restrict your musical experience at all.

NOW – –*right now*– – If you want to show your support for a DRM free experience and urge Steve Jobs and Apple to lead the way out of DRM and its Digital Restrictions Mafia, then add your signature to the “Open Letter to Steve Jobs” on the Defective By Design website. The letter simply urges him to back up his online pledge with reasonable action, specifically by opening the DRM for all media in the iTunes Store that does not require this impairment. This would cover giving independent musicians and labels the option to decline DRM restrictions being added to their files on iTunes, as well as opening DRM from other products that are not required to use DRM. Jobs also has the authority and corporate standing as a member of Disney’s Board of Directors to have the DRM dropped from Disney’s movies and videos sold in the iTunes Store.

Now for the 2nd step : Starting right now, you can begin living a life free from DRM. you probably won’t want to ditch all the DRM music that you already have and enjoy listening to, but you can make concious choices about the music that you purchase in the future. So much of the music we listen to today will be out of regular rotation in our playlists a year or 2 from now ayway. Making choices about music now could actually convert more and more of our playlists to be free of restrictions. Defective By Design features an online guide to DRM-free Living. The guide features links to record labels, online music stores, software, players and more that provide digital music to the public without the restrictive DRM.
This is where i cheer and jump for joy – Yay!!! Because, there are some great stores on this list that i already frequent, and have been posting links to for you to listen to the great music that i have been writing about! Not only do i vouch for some of these sites, i highly encourage you to go check out their selection! Bleep.com is on there, a great online store for electronic music (Warp Records, Traum, Ed Banger), hip hop and dj music (Ninja Tunes, XL), blues and reggae (Birdman, Trojan) and much much more. The store is vast, and nearly every song on every album has a preview clip to listen to. And yep – eMusic.com and Canada’s Nettwerk is on there as well. When you are checking out this amazing guide, don’t miss page two, because that’s where you will find the link to DRM-free streaming videos like the Decemberists and Postal Service, as well as internet tv and video podcasts.
Oh, and speaking of defective design, many links in the guide were not working for me! but, i was able to locate every website address by hovering over either the site name or the tag name, reading the address and typing it by hand in the location bar. hopefully DbD will have that fixed soon.

Whew! There you have it, an exhaustive report on how to survive as a music lover in the age of music restriction.
